New Audi A6

Ohhh so the Audi's look the same, the A4, A6 and A8...but then again so do the BMW 3, 5 and 7 and the Merc C and E look the same as well and no doubt the new S will follow the trend.

Come on I know this forum has a love affair going on with BMW but get a grip, the A6 is hardly a bad car is it and the new one based on the updated platform should be an improvement on the current model. The VW group diesel engines are very good and the supercharged 3 isn't exactly a bad engine either.

I dont like BMW's or Mercs especially, i just think Audis are worse still.

There isnt even that much BMW love here as far as i can see, apart from this A6's main rival the new 5 series which is rightly being praised.

I like it in a kinda plutonic way lol. Its inoffensive and modern looking without doing anything wild; but I expect thats exactly what they were looking for. Not much for the pop up sat nav; as 99% of the time its going to be up, therefore whats the point. The in dash display doesnt make up the difference either.

As a current owner of a A6 3lTDI Quattro Avant I can tell its been a brilliant car over the last 24ish months but I only bought it because I got it ridiculously cheap; so would I buy another on just merit, probably not. Would I buy a new 5 series either, definately not. Dont like the new 5 series styling at all (SE that is, not seen the M-Sport) and honestly preferred the looks of the E60 - although it is starting to look its age too.

For me, if its a saloon then the BMW wins, if its an estate then the Audi looks better than the BMW. Dont know why, but the Audi estate just looks less boxy and a little more sporty in estate variant.

I feel like I should say I'll go +3 on that, but actually I'm not so sure, I haven't driven the new 5 series ...I've had a good poke around them both and I've driven their predecessors ...and owned an E39, I really do like the new 5 series, it's just in a different league to the E60, which I didn't care for, I like the SE inside and out, the Jaguar is a great looker too but I'm not sure I really feel that it would get my money over the BMW, probably not in fact. And I'm a Jaaag man :) ...and a BMW man, had a few of each anyway.

Given the choice though I wouldn't buy either, I'd just go right to the top and take a 7 series or an XJ ...now the new XJ I am not so fond of, so a 7 series, S class or an A8 it'd be, I couldn't possibly say which I'd have witout doing my own back to back test, they are all fantastic.

Stick a BMW badge on it Fox or perhaps 4 of them interlinked like the Audi badge

All bugs are then ironed out. Probably.

For added BMW authenticity, drive it in snow but ensure you go through a hedge backwards.

;)

The 5 series might have slightly better driving dynamics or have the slight edge on build quality but honestly they do nothing for me, like most BMWs. The Jag just looks fantastic inside and out, and I would feel a greater sense of occasion driving one.

You wont 'get' a car like the F10 until you drive one. It isnt a sports car, it isnt there to visually thrill you or throw you into an Apex at +1G. It isnt something you'd have on your bedroom wall.

It's talents are deeper than that - it wont 'do anything' for you until you drive one. Then you'll get it.

Its just one of those all round great cars, like most of the 5 series have been, its just not in your face with it.

I dont even know what diesel engine was in that one i had a go at but it is a superb car.

They also have the advantage of not having a rowing boat glued on the dashboard.

I understand this, but would the XF not offer a similar experience? Is the F10 *that* much better? Does it have slightly sharper steering or a slightly quieter ride or..? I don't care if it doesn't handle like an Elise, it's not what I'd buy the car for, hence my comment about not being fussed if the driving dynamics of the BMW are a teensy bit better, or whatever. Are you saying that, bearing in mind the fact that I think my Mondeo has more than enough comfort and refinement on the motorway for me, if I drove the F10 and XF back to back, I'd immediately see the benefits of the F10? It's not like we're comparing it to something Japanese. :)

Anyway this is all academic, I'm not going to be buying an executive saloon any time soon ;)

I'd have an XF over a F10 all day long, because they are a bit different and i like Jags, even though im not really fond of the new Jag shapes, at least you stand out from the bland Germans.

As for driving, an XF is probably 9/10 of an F10 maybe 8/10 but as im not James Hunt that dosent matter, both fab cars to drive, might as well just go with the heart if you ask me.
