I cant believe work.....

I'd never walk more than 60minutes to get to work let alone 3+ hours (8miles) in cold/snow weather (in any weather really). Anybody that think this is reasonable have got some issues lets say.

Not many people have the right gear for long walks in sub zero temperatures. I couldn't imagine how cold my feet would be if I walked that far in my normal boots, or god forbid my work shoes.

Its the foot wear thats the big problem when walking in snowy conditions, as once your feet are cold thats it, it just rises up your legs and you will definately get ill!

Right here is the update some of you been waiting for lol:

Yes i attempted to get to work i left at 7.50pm and yes i got there at 10.40pm. I looked in to the buses again & none of my normal bus routes were running still, but found a route that would get me a bit closer to work using 2 buses that were still running a very limited service.

After the 2nd bus it still left me about 2.5 miles away from work so i walked it!! An i tell you it was bloody cold an it took about 50 mins to walk.

I tried speaking to one of my managers when i got in & he just laughed when i told him what they said on the phone, i tried asking him what the companies views would be if i have issues with buses on Sunday (tonight) an told him how I had got in . An all he said don't worry the roads will be much clearer by then - So really didn't answer my question.

An i had to make the same trip home this morning the walk took a bit longer as i shattered plus i slipped over but the other 2 buses were running a bit more frequent and it took 2 hours 30mins to get back home.

At the moment my normal buses are still running tonight so i should still get in ok, if my achy body lets me lol. Not sure if it was from the slip or the walking in the snow that far but my legs really do hurt.

Well done for making the effort. If I was your boss I would really take the **** out of you. As said, in time you will know how to play systems. ;)

By the time you got there was it worth your effort?....

If public transport is cancelled and the employee has no way to get into work, other than walking 8 miles each way at night in horrible conditions (with asthma, which can be exacerbated by the cold)

I know this much, have to start at 5am, left the house at 4.20 on Friday (14 mile drive there) to find 5 inches of snow that decided to park itself on the ground. Walked 300 yards to the main road to see how bad they were and was gasping for breath by the time I got home :(. Manager says I should "do everything I can to get there".. what, plough the roads myself? :D

Managed to get it was a day's holiday in the end, but there were rather arsey about it. Most of our employees live within a mile of the store, I don't, and our store has a tendency not to bother covering if someone's sick/can't make it. I'm not making a massive effort for a 28-mile round trip and a minimum wage job, ta.

OP.
You know as well as i do if you don't go in then it will fall on your work mates to do your Eisle.
Don't be a ***** & find some way of getting in, You said you are on Probation & Attendance is Number 1. Putting yourself out & getting in when others don't will get you a contract. ;)
I know from my own experience that doing your own eisle is hard enough during the xmas period, Having to cover other people who are to Gay to find a way in makes it nigh on impossible to supply the public with what they need to enjoy Xmas.

50 mins to walk 2.5 miles?!

Walked about 2 miles home from the train at 10pm last night in a hoody and trainers and took me around 15/20 mins I think. Only mistake I made was forgetting to roll my sleeves down, arms were very red when I got in. Cycling 5 miles each way to work at the moment too, doesn't bother me in the slightest although I did fall off for the first time this morning.

Maybe I'm just not a silly townie, but 50 mins sounds like a hell of a long time to walk that far.

Move to England.

Ok, this has the potential to turn into some journey home.

The train home is currently cancelled. I am hoping is just one and not the line that is shut, like a few places in the country.

The alternative is get half way home from a lift, then try to get a taxi in this weather. On a good day it is a £40 taxi ride.

The other option is go the LONG way round. Birmingham to Cardiff, as that line is running, then, train back UP from Cardiff.

That basically turn a 90min train ride into 4 hours, on a good day.

You jogged then? 3mph is a reasonable walking pace, especially considering parts may have been slippy underfoot.

I know from my own experience that doing your own aisle is hard enough during the xmas period, Having to cover other people who are to Gay to find a way in makes it nigh on impossible to supply the public with what they need to enjoy Xmas.

Retailers hire more than 1 person per aisle, especially in the Christmas period. Stacking shelves isn't exactly hard so it's not like if the OP didn't turn in that Tesco would have been screwed...

Why do people always think that when we get weather like this and that when someone can't get into work that they do it on purpose?

You don't work, you don't get paid. I for one wouldn't do it unless it was absolutely necessary!

So you reckon you "walked" at 7-8mph? Either you have misjudged the distance or you did not look at your watch but no way were you doing that by walking.

Have you been drinking?

Well you would know better than me wouldn't you mate as I only do the Beers Wines & Spirit aisle in Tesco. :p:p:p
There is around 12 people to fit out the whole store during the night so if say 3 don't show Yes it is possible thatr the shop won't be ready for opening. So take your  & shove it up your ****. :p:p:p:p

I walk pretty fast compared to average and it takes me ~12 minutes to do a mile... easily the best part of half an hour to do 2 miles on a good day and thats in clear conditions where I'm not having to be extra careful about my footing.

You must work in a small store then for there to be only 12 people working or that your store is very tight with money, especially in the Christmas period. :o

I've worked for both Tesco and ASDA doing both day and night shifts and 12 people wouldn't have even covered 3 aisles...
