Yup, 3-4 miles an hour is fast ish so 15-20 minutes should get you a mile. Some people will be able to walk faster but to do 2 miles in that time would mean you're jogging, or have legs 6 foot long...
Either way 2 miles in 30-40 minutes in "these conditions" shouldn't be that difficult for someone reasonably fit.
2 weeks ago I walked 2.5 miles and it took me 40 minutes. No way I would ever walked 8 miles, that's like 2 hours of solid walk and it cold snowy conditions is a no go for sure. I can't even imagine how you could do an 8 hours shift and then walk back home after this. Just a way to kill yourself for sure.

I must walk really slow then as it takes me 35 mins to walk 1.6 miles to work when its not like the north pole outside.

My girl friend walked to work in the snow (she usually cycles) 3 weeks ago. They won't be seeing her back in work for 2-3 months because she broke her leg.
They’ve lost a member of staff for 8 week+, Christmas is ruined and I’m stressed to the point of a break down because of running about after her. It’s just lucky she can get full pay for those 8-12 weeks or we’d be screwed. I suspect your employer might not be so generous.
8 miles is a long walk in these conditions. I’d ask if they can pay half the taxi fare or give you a lift.

I just got an impromptu lift to drotwich, going to bus to Worcester then train.
But in the hurry to leave i forgot to put on my boots and scarf.....I hope the wait for the bus isn't long!

Years ago, Sainsbury's declined to give me a job on the grounds that "I wasn't enthusiastic enough." I lol'd hard at that one!
The average walking speed is about 3mph. That's in normal conditions, presumably on the flat.
Doing 3mph in snow would be very good going, and 5mph is frankly not going to happen.
Hah! The average walking pace for a young non chubby adult is around 3.5MPH though.
1.6miles in 35mins is 4.5MPH, and up a hill too. guy must have legs of awesomeness ¬_¬
