Hey all,

My washing machine has just gone, it was in this house when i moved in and doesn't wash clothes well either. I've cleaned out everywhere i could and still was useless. yesterday, theres indicators saying the pcb has gone.

So im in the market for something new. My house is small and doesn't have room for anything more than the washing machine.

What are your opinions on a washer dryer?

How much would you say per month, do they use in electric, considering theres only me and my misses here?

Cheers

Edit: I should add, i currently dry my clothes in the corner of my living room one of those small dryers.

Me and my ex had a washer dryer.

I now have just a washing machine.

I have to say nine times out of 10 I don't miss it. It was however very useful in that 'laundry emergency' situation to be able to shove a load in a night and have it ready to wear in the morning. Ours was very unreliable (it was an Indesit,), breaking down 3 times in the first year.

Another thing to note is that they use water while drying. A condensing dryer had a large passive heatsink type thingy. Because there's extra gubbins in a washer dryer they instead have a smaller water cooled heatsink.

Best get a separate washer and dryer tbh. I have had two combined washer driers and when they breakdown it is hugely expensive to repair. Repairing a washer or a dryer separately is much cheaper.

The mrs couldn't live without our tumble drier given that we have two young kids who are dirt magnets!

Don't have room for separates unfortunately.

My washer just broke was in Indesit. It does look super cheap too. Won't be getting one of these again any time soon :)

Our one is crap. The dryer makes the washing machine cramped so it doesn't wash as well as a conventional machine and you can't fit as much in it, and it's next to useless as a dryer. Kinda stuck with it because we rent, but I'd say no. Washer and a dryer = yes, but combined washer/dryer = no.

How is it broke? If it's trying to tick over still but the drum does'nt want to turn then I'd suggest checking the brushes on the motor as they might be worn out & need replacing.

That's probably no help if it's just dead in general & you have indications the pcb is up the spout. But you never know.

Also have you checked fuses inside washer? All above done making sure unplugged first of course!

ps you can have a dryer located above the washer if space allows. You can buy brackets etc. (If I remember correctly)

from a former domestic applicance/TV salesman, take my advice & the others who have done so here. DON'T

Instead, buy a new washer (like this one)

http://www.bosch-home.co.uk/our-pro...anding/classixx/WAE24165GB.html?source=browse

& one of these

http://www.crosslee.co.uk/english/whiteknight/products/37aw.html

a lot more reliable than combining the 2 & more energy efficient.

The only problem that the 2nd one has (besides the separate that I have no room for) is the bullet point - "Mobility wheels"... for some reason, puts me off :p

Even though I did say I have no room for separates, I still get a lot of suggestions of them :p

Anyway, I'm possibly separating my living room off in the near future, so may have an area where I will be able to put a separate dryer.

I will have to decide all this just after new years though, hopefully there'll be some sales on somewhere.

Cheers for the suggestions though.

i have the second one down and it works a treat! :-) washing dries after 20-30 mins after fast spin :P

I've got a Samsung washer/drier, whilst not as good as seperates I find it good enough. Washes well and is very quiet.

I only got it because my washer constantly broke down while in warranty and I complained and they gave me an upgaded model.

It will dry a full load of clothes/towels but it will take anywhere between 1.50-2 hours to do compared to half the time in a conventional drier. But if space is at a premium like it is for me, I couldn't go back to drying clothes on radiators etc. I'm too lazy.

washer dryers are a pile of tosh.

Ours broke, landlord replaced it (hoover one) and that broke within about a month. Even when it was working clothes just came out hot and wet.

Our first place had a washer/dryer and I didn't rate it at all - it wasn't particularly good at washing clothes, nor was it particularly good at drying them.

We replaced it with a Miele washing machine and a cheap, small tumble dryer which only gets used in "emergencies" or in the Winter when there is no space left on radiators.

The tumble dryer cost pennies, is tiny and weighs nothing - you could probably find a location for something this size easily - so I'd probably opt for a decent washing machine and a cheap tumble dryer. Dimensions are 500x640x460.

Definately buy seperate. House that we are renting out right now has a washer/dryer, but the dryer doesn't dry! :o
