Hey...

Errmm yeah...

Basically I want to buy a new GPU to add into my new system I'm putting together soon (woohoo and so on).

*BUT* the main uses of the machine isn't to just play crysis, instead it will also be a video / image editing machine. I'm working from home a lot recently, and my Q6600 is starting to struggle a little with video.

Wait, I'm veering off point. (can you tell I'm tired when I'm typing this :p)

So the only question is, do ATI cards (for example, the 6850) acclerate Photoshop / Premiere / whatever similar to NV's CUDA? I thought no at first, but then noticed this http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/831/cpsid_83117.html and it shows they're supported, but you need to have 896MB (I think) of ram...

Can anyone clear this up for me? I'll give you internet cake!

*The cake may be alie.

You don't need a fast GC for image editing (mine is over 5 years old and doesn't slow the process), but you'll want it for video encoding. As you say, nvidia use Cuda. I think ATI use AVT which came out with the 4800 series, not sure how it compares, but if you don't get the answer here, search a forum dedicated to video editing.

CUDA is only used in Adobe Premiere. The default installation of Photoshop only uses OpenGL for a few bits and pieces so either ATi or Nvidia is fine. AFAIK, no other Adobe programs use GPU acceleration.

Either way, if you're using Premiere intensively, you'll benefit from a decent mid range Nvidia card, but certainly don't buy anything fast based on Photoshop. I've had it running fine on an 8600GT. I think the only thing Photoshop uses the GPU for that is worthwhile is the zoom function. It's a bit of a gimmick.

if you dont use PS for 3D etc and only for normal photo PP, Photoshop wont use your GPU. You could even run it with integrated GPU on your MOBO if you would like to ;)

I was under the impression that it does help with things such as scrolling around images, and applying filters...

Besides, it still would affect other adobe products such as premiere...

I would look into Adobe Mercury Playback Engine as that needs at least a 275GTX to work
It will work with ATI cards(software mode=SLOW) but it won't use the GPU and CUDA.
If you are going for a 460GTX make sure it's the 1gig version.
