one of the most amazing mk2 golf builds ever undertaken

And here is my absolute number one hate of the VAG scene. Anyone who disagrees or doesn't see the sheer brilliance of all their "hard work, skill and dedication" (despite how pointless and unnecessary) is ignorant.

He's spent hundreds upon hundreds of man hours and no doubt thousands of pounds to create something that isn't remotely impressive to the vast majority of people outside the VAG scene and somehow that is OUR fault?

To my ignorant self I don't see the logic behind anything that he has done, let alone why it is so amazing.

Look at this for a second from someone who is not in the scene. He seemingly wanted modern features such as ABS, A/C, Traction Control, a modern interior and the 1.8T lump, so what did he do? He bought a by his own words perfectly repairable Seat Leon and then proceeded to ***** many man hours in retrofitting it into an old golf and arguably ruining the charterer of an old car. Has anybody else spotted the logic fail yet? He had a modern car with all the features that we should be praising him for getting to work, but instead of doing what most people would do and slap a new bonnet, bumper and headlights on he stuck it all into his Golf, and in the process made a not so interesting project.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an advocate of tuning and modifying. I can at the very least understand most trends, scenes and fads, but certainly not the VAG attitude of "Let's do something a bit pointless and then moan when people don't get it".

Previous offenders include:
The Rat Look
Stretched Tyres
Putting wheels from other marques onto your car
"Tidied"/stealth engine bays
etc

(This rant was fuelled by Strongbow. Hard Earned™)

Oh don't get me wrong I loved and hated the VAG scene. Ultimately it's why I left it behind really. Some of the people in it are like you say and very close minded. I'm not suggesting everyone has to love the linked thread in the OP, but the above posts made it out to be a mediocre "same old" project which is not accurate.
Anyway... GOlf MK2 + 20vt I think a lot of people are quick to mock as being "done before" without having experienced one first hand. I have.

I don't see how, even if you don't think it's worthwhile, you can say this is the same as any of those things. Anyone can ask someone at a garage to put small tyres on big wheels, artificially rust my car etc, but everything he has done appears to have been done well and in good taste. Just because you wouldn't do it, doesn't make it rubbish.

If I could make a boiler for my house myself from a block of metal, despite it being pointless, doesn't mean you can't appreciate the mechanical skill.

I like it too, great effort and it appears to have come out really well. Not read it all yet but will do at some point to see just how far the restoration went. ~264bhp in that must be a right hoot. :)

I think he's done an amazing job TBH, I really like it. I do agree with the comments re: the VW 'scene' though. They can be a funny lot, some of the bizarre fashions that go around are cringe-worthy :/

It's a nice job but "one of the most amazing mk2 Golf builds EVER"? Hmmm there can't have been many amazing mk2 Golf builds in that case.

I certainly admire the work gone into it, but having never driven a Mk2 or a 1.8t variant a few questions if I may?

Is the Mk2 (standard) that good a car? Or does it just have some sort of cult status?

I thought the 1.8t was reknowned for being a bit "boring"? Which leads me to ask:

Does the engine suit the car?

personally i dont like mk2's(shh the vag brigade will burn me at the stake) as my love is for mk3 Vr's but when you've seen hundreds of 20vt conversions then you see someone taking the time and effort to do it properly and transplant EVERYTHING down to the airbags its pretty impressive. lots and i mean lots of attention to detail which imo is what makes an amazing project compared to just another 20vt that was knocked together in a weekend

always great to see motors swing into action with a full on debate on the matter, fwiw i'm a vw man but hate the whole scene crap

I love it but then I'm one of those VAG weirdos. Is the Leon dash not almost the same as the A3? I think it looks great!

For someone who owns a Mk2 GTI and should be reasonably up on their Golfs, I'm amazed at your levels of ignorance.

What's so "gash" about it

It's not "just a 1.8T" - did the ABS, Air conditioning, traction control etc transplants all completely pass you by? Genuinely confused by your comments in this thread, looks like you skipped to the last page and made the rest up.

I know nothing about this sort of stuff but I'm impressed with the build. It looks to be far more than just an engine swap, nearer IMO to a modernisation of a the mk2 GTi.

They are a great car, regarded as the best of all the Golf GTIs (although, from the MK5 onwards the modern GTIs a good cars again). It's up there with the Pug 205 gti as one of the all time great GTIs. I love mine.

As for dropping a 20vt in there, I can see the appeal but it's not something I would do. When/if I get bored with my current engine I'll build a screaming 16v on throttle bodies :D

Given the fact I couldn't do an engine conversion I'm always mildly impressed by people who can.

The 1.8T conversion is probably the safest conversion though as its been done a fair few times. Now an R36 engine conversion into a mk2
