Just wondering if anybody out there is willing to help me with a little comparison. We all know GTA IV is a huge resource hog, and I was wondering what kind of difference the 2gb of the 6970 would make in game. I've got the 6970 to test would anybody like to try the 5870 out for me. I'll match whatever settings you use for the benchmark, and post up the results.

I havn't got one but I found this:

Test system:

Processor
Intel Core i7-975 Extreme (Bloomfield) 3.33 GHz, 6.4 GT/s, 8 MB L3 Cache, power-saving settings disabled
Overclocked to 4 GHz (25 * 160 MHz)
Motherboard
Asus Rampage II Extreme (LGA 1366) X58/ICH10, BIOS 1504
Memory
Corsair Dominator 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 8-8-8-24 @ 1,600 MHz
Hard Drive
Intel SSDSA2MH160G2C1 160 GB SATA 3 Gb/s

Wow! 5870 crossfire made no difference whatsoever?? Is Vsync on or something or is there a fps cap on GTA4??

Edit: I see it only makes any real difference in higher res.

Think theres a cap in the game. Believe I read it elsewhere that it could be taken off by editing some file, but I don't actually have the game. Crossfire 5870 would make a difference in most games the scale around 80-90% in most!

The extra gig of Vram over a standard 5870 will allow you to max out the view distance without any cache stuttering, but the engine is very much CPU-bound.

I doubt there'll be any difference whatsoever between a 2gb 5870 and a 6970. The only players I've heard of getting a constant >60fps are those with i7s clocked past 4ghz. I'm getting minimums of 20 in heavy traffic with headlights on, everything maxed except view distance at 25, which keeps the Vram in the green.

Edit: There's no FPS cap.

with everything set to max i was getting an average of 53 fps with my system clocked at stock 3.2 and a slight overclock on the gpu. might try overclocking back to 3.8 2moro and re running it then.

Clocked mine back to 3.2 and set the exe's affinity to 4 cores, turbo core off:

Code:
Statistics
Average FPS: 50.32
Duration: 41.67 sec

System memory usage: 32%
Video memory usage: 99%

Graphics Settings

GTA4 is also a very CPU intensive game and there comes a point in it where only a faster CPU makes a difference as well.

When GTA IV first came out i had a Q6600 @ 3.6 then around 6 months later i upgraded to an i7 920 @ 4.2 and it hardly made any difference

poor port imo

+1

I upgraded from dual core to a quad and made **** all difference in this game, despite everyone telling me it would fix everything. So disappointed with how badly ported this game was. Such as shame as there was so much fun in it.
