111 gigapixel image

Considering how much time and money that must have been invested they could have put more into the lens that was being used, as the 100-400 with a 2x isn't the sharpest combination. Still pretty impressive
 
Awesome, but some of the added Advertisements look so wrong, like a child has done them in paint, I guess they're the sponsors or something?
 
How are these done? I assume by taking further and further zoomed in photos of section inch by inch, then stitched together??
Im confused though cause they seem to seemlessly move inwards? Is this done by taking a photo at 100mm then 110mm then 120mm etc of every part of that photo?

Its made up of photos all at the 800mm focal lenght which are then stitched together
