Hi,

Am thinking about getting myself a camera and woundered if the EOS 10D is any good as a starting point?

Haven't ever really done a lot of photography so don't want to splash out on anything too expensive at the start.

Thoughts or other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

From what i can remember the 20D (I still use a 20D) was meant to be a good advancement over the 10D so it might be better to look at one of those as they can be found quite cheap now.

Go for 20D as it offers a lot more and on TP they go from £100 to £130. In terms of what it offers is EF and EF-S lens support (as opposed to just EF), E-TTL II flash metering, faster USB 2.0 and support for wireless triggers not to mention a bigger buffer and more shutter speed options. Well there's also more pixels and newer image processor (Digic II) so basically it's a much better upgrade over 10D and I got one myself recently as a first camera and love it. It still offers plenty of features and produces good photographs although the next one up 30D isn't that good of an improvement as it offers only small improvements and in terms of picture quality isn't that much better while costing £200+.

Its a good dslr and will capture good images but it is very very dated.

The main problem is that for people like you EFS lenses were invented to be cheap but they wont mount on a 10D.
The technical performance of it is as dated as they come now and it is a very old camera so if it died it wouldnt be worth repairing over the cost of 2nd hand better dslrs.
I would go for the 20D but saying that the 20D was my first DSLR in 2005.

Seeing as its a hobby you add to all the time I would highly consider setting out a small budget and post back for some great options.

if you were going to go for a 10D i'd say, save you money, buy something like a Nikon F4 or F100, that way, any lenses that you buy will also work if/when you decide to buy a modern DSLR.

yes, they do shoot film but it's not that big a deal, it also forces you to compose your shots properly rather than just machine-gun your way to a decent photo.

And any cost savings you make will be gobbled up in development charges. Not a great idea IMHO.

if you choose your development shop wisely or buy the right film you can get your development done for free.

and if you're a Costco member, they sell REALLY cheap film and they go processing and scanning for rock-bottom prices.

TP being...?

Bearing in mind that these cameras, while great value for money, often come without a lens. What were you planning to get?

Talk Photography, it's a photography forum (much, much larger than the OcUK community)

Plenty of users posting up second hand kit there, 99.99% trustworthy, haven't seen any problems in my time there.

agreed that the 20D might be worth a shot.. ive still got one as a spare and the missus uses one as her main. theyre pretty solid.

dont worry about the 30D, its more like a 20.5D :D
