Email spam galore

The spam that I receive is getting out of control by the day. I use to get a few which didn't bother me but I now get anythign from 50-100 a day and some creep into my inbox. I use pop3 on my phone so it would downloads these too.

I think my email address has been spoofed so that spam is sent out with my email address. Can a web email provider close my account for this because I'm supposely sending spam from "my" email? I have a few email addresses that I use like one for personal (the spam one) and the rest for anything else.

How do spammers get my email address? I'm careful with my personal email ad. However I do suspect it must have been one of the jobsites that I use. I do have my details searchable. Can any random Joe pay a small fee to look for people's details?

Is this a free email account?

Do you own the domain?

Depending on the situation there should be some measures you can take to stop the spam. The default filtering on free Hotmail and Gmail accounts is quite good I find these days.

If you want more then you could pay a company to filter it all properly for you. Depends on the nature of the situation really.

Yes it's a free account - a yahoo one. Is there anything I can do about the spoofing?

define spam. i get people selling my stuff but they are legitimate companies. they almost always have an un-subscribe button at the bottom of the email which i always click. seems to keep them at bay as i now only get a few

random stuff like:
Random names in the subject line.
fsfsijrwijrwrsf
Job related ones like says "job id:_________" (def spam as I get them all the time)
We are recruiting for xyz (again same as above)
Job openings
Usual viagra stuff etc.

and more recently my email address in the subject line and a few with my first and last name!

Yup, happens a fair bit :(

... How do spammers get my email address? ...
It's amazing how many people send and forward "joke" emails to a whole list of other people. By looking at just one of these you can often find a vast number of genuine random email addresses.

Why can't people:
  • a) delete ALL email addresses before forwarding emails?
  • b) use the BCC: facility to hide email addresses?

... I'm careful with my personal email ad. ...
Hopefully from now on you will use a "throwaway" Yahoo! email address ;)
