Considering a car change in March-April next year and looking to spend upto 45k

Apologies, the R8 was implied. However, the free maintenance on the R8 for the first 4 years over here is pretty awesome, helps keep some of the bills away. R8's are still quite new and as such the R8 tax hasn't really come into effect yet, most of the parts are actually cheaper than they are with Porsche, with the notable exception of anything carbon fiber!

So the R8 is 911 money to run then ?

Absolutely, they're basically about the same, just over here the R8 is about $40k more expensive than it should be. I can't even find one here for less than $110k any more, that's with 20k miles on them. I can buy a new Turbo for that almost.

I've no idea if they fall into budget or what they're like to drive but what about the RS8. Same engine as the R8 with the flexibility of a big 4 door saloon.

Im talking about on the road, 1 in 100 explore those cars to the limit, wouldnt you agree?

Maybe im wrong, im a boot it in a straight line, slow down for corners man myself :)

It was the booting it on the straights bit that was scary! It did not want to stay straight and you had to be very very competent to push one in the corners. I truly enjoyed driving it but it's one of those cars that after a good thrashing, you're glad to get out of it and say "thank **** that's over, I lived".

Sod it i dont like them anyway, a tiptronic is the way forward in my book :)

I obviously didnt boot the one i tried hard enough, this is why i say M cars and GT variants are wasted on me.

I dunno i just dont like Jap cars.

But thats just me, i still respect what they did with that car, its just not for me.

Iv still yet to drive one mind, but the look does me in.

Fair enough, I don't like the look of mine from a few angles either. I think there is an assumption sometimes that if you drive a GT-R, you can't afford a "proper" Porsche and there has to be *something* wrong with it, it can't really be that good etc. It's a really crass thing to say, but I could have spent more. I didn't because I genuinely believe it offers something very special...nothing to do with the price ultimately, considering what else was on the table.

I'm way too defensive about it.

That's exactly how I felt after having a passenger ride in one.

It cured my fear of being a passenger in cars :D

You know I'd never heard that before. I can't say that I've ever thought "oh he bought a GTR because he couldn't afford a Porsche"! That's mad, the GTR is an immense car and I think it's a technological marvel, it's also far from cheap to run. I think it's laughable sometimes how people get so jumped up on these things, it's largely from the uninitiated population too, not the actual owners.

Your too defensive and i did a long time ago say on here that i knew money was not your motivation for buying that car.

I can imagine your sitting there with a tidy lump, i know you just like them.

Unfortunately, there is no RS8.

The other car with the 4.2 V8 out of the R8 that you're thinking of is the RS4.

Can't see it being Gibbo's thing. He's not one for practicality !

Iv heard that stupid rubbish before, its the sort of **** spouted by people with no money, a bit like the "poor mans Porsche" rubbish.

I'm sorry but *anyone* that can afford a Porsche, even an older Boxster is not poor, these are expensive toys and I commend anyone that is capable of running one :)

its the badge snob thing i think.

By people who see the GTR as being Jap Crap and the 911 as being the true sportscar. There was a lot of heated debates when the GTR went round the ring faster than most of the 911s.

Oh I'm very much aware of that, I was just referring to the "poor man's Porsche" comment which was new to me.

Does that mean i can feel justified in buying a 2.7 986 for the commute and not worry that "its not a real Porsche"? :D
