Oh I'm very much aware of that, I was just referring to the "poor man's Porsche" comment which was new to me.

that was one of the justifications some people used.

That people bought the GTR because they couldn't afford the Porsche.

The GTR is substantially cheaper than the turbo ... (daft i know !, like the 60k of the GTR is cheap )

Yes of course you can, anything with a Porsche badge on it is a real Porsche, I've never understood the sentiments of some people.

Clarkson-ism.

It was in his review of the SLK55 vs Boxster. :/

By people who see the GTR as being Jap Crap and the 911 as being the true sportscar. There was a lot of heated debates when the GTR went round the ring faster than most of the 911s.

I'd love a 911 but I wouldnt even ask where the Nissan dealer is*

*Hypothetically speaking, a test drive in a GTR for the lulz would have to be done if I was ever buying cars in that price range.

Yea the uninformed call Boxsters poor man Porsches.

Woops meant S8, the 5.2 V8 FSi, not too shabby at 440Bhp.

The S8 doesn't have the same engine as the RS4 / R8. That engine is the 4.2 V8, the S8 has a 5.2 V8.

And the S8 is even more so what gibbo doesn't want. The S8 is an absolute barge ! Gibbo like's his cars to handle, which is why he spent a not unsubstantial ammount making his mustang handle like a european car !

The S8 does not have a V8 at all, the S8 is fitted with a 5.2 litre V10. You'll find this V10 in the Audi R8, as well. It's heavily related to the V10 you'll find in the Gallardo.

So he was correct with his revised comment (Though not the RS4 bit).

Do *not* take this out of context but he is *only* spending 45k, he's not sitting here asking us what he should spend his 100k+ cash on. Quite simply put, at *any* price range except for brand new, any Aston/Ferrari/Lambo or Porsche can be serious financial obligations, buying them is just the start. An out of warranty Aston would terrify me, and I've had a couple, which were both sold well before the warranty expired due to the hideous reliability and poor build quality issues we had.

This is why the 997 C4S is the best choice on his list (it probably is from a driver's point of view anyway). With the 2yr warranty from OPCs as standard now you can pretty much forget running costs, save for tyres.

You'll probably lose your £25k cash in depreciation over those two years though :).

Thats the point i was trying to make, he dont need to spend the 45, 35 and a 300 quid private plate will do the trick :)

Your too defensive and i did a long time ago say on here that i knew money was not your motivation for buying that car.

I can imagine your sitting there with a tidy lump, i know you just like them.

I know, I should relax and just accept that fat dentists will never give me a thumbs up.

You know I'd never heard that before. I can't say that I've ever thought "oh he bought a GTR because he couldn't afford a Porsche"! That's mad, the GTR is an immense car and I think it's a technological marvel, it's also far from cheap to run. I think it's laughable sometimes how people get so jumped up on these things, it's largely from the uninitiated population too, not the actual owners.

Early 2009 was a ripe time for GT-R vs Porsche threads. The cost issue constantly came up, time and time again with the implication that you buy Jap because you cannot afford a Deutschland Special, especially on the American forums.

As far as unintiated opinions, I agree. 9/10ths of what I read about the GT-R outside of owners forums is tripe, people tend to grab hold of the slightest journalistic criticism of the car (the ease of driving it...when they forget this issue raises its head when the GT-R is being compared to GT3's, SRT10's and LP560's...then fail to read the rest of the article where the GT-R actually "wins" the review) and rag it. Tiresome and I hardly rise to the bait anymore.

I dont know what you earn, i dont want to guess but lets take a 997 turbo, warranty aside brakes 2k, tyres 1200 quid, suspension refresh 5k ,if you havent got an OPC warranty and you have a dispute with warrant direct lets say (who are now useless for Porsche by the way disputing claims left right and centre) any problem you have counts in the thousands not the hundreds.

Why lay yourself open to that, im gonna shut up now cos i dont want to sound like an arse.

Hi mate

But I don't want a 997 Turbo, way out of my budget range and too costly to run.

Surely a 997 C2S or C4S cost less to run? Plus the fact a C2S or C4S in this price bracket will still be quite new and have OPC warranty?

Absolutely, thats what im saying, an AM or a turbo997 is another league of expense. Get a C4s you cant fall off.
