Yeno that place
So with the snow constantly cancelling my driving practical over the past few weeks, i had to re-book it. i was given a date for mid jan and i thought this was too far away.

Phoned this morning for a cancellation at 9am, and the woman laughed and asked me did i want to do it in an hour or so. they had a cancellation due to the snow all week, and had a free spot for me.

went out did fine, came back with a pass and 6 minors, which im chuffed at.

so i phoned around looking for insurance quotes, now i must admit i knew it wasnt going to be cheap, but after the quotes i got today ill never get a car legally on the road. Im 22

I was tired of using price comparison sites, as they were giving me quotes of 1700-2200 so i said ill phone around a few.

1st £3200
2nd £2700
3rd £2400
all needed a deposit of around £250-£350

This was for a 2010 1.4HDi Peugeot 207 S-5 Door worth 8k (not yet bought, was going to get HP for this "if" i could get a resonable insurance quote, doesnt look like this is happening now.

My post code is horrible, and im left with not being able to insure a car in my area due to the theft rate and claim rate. i know its not legal but im almost forced to use my girls address who lives in a nice area over 50 mile away just so i can get an affordable quote.

Looks like its time for putting in more hours at work and maybe hitting the bank for a small loan to get me on the road.

Chris

Try getting a cheaper car first. You don't want to be buying an expensive first car.

I've tried to explain this to a friend who is talking about buying a £15,000 BMW for a first car. He's got a bit of money but still a crazy idea but I've tried to reason with him but going to let get on with it.

Congrats by the way and well done grabbing that spot. Most people would just sit on their arses and wait.

Please don't HP 8 grand on a brand new car immediately after passing your test.

This is all the advise i can think of right now.

Sorry for laughing but I can just hear a telephone call for a quote in my head - "And how long have you held a full licence, sir?", reply, "3 hours, 12 minutes and 36 seconds".:D

although i agree on the price of the car being a high risk damage wise until youve had a bash about in a cheapo econo crap box. From my experience car value makes little difference to insurance qoutes in these kind of cars.

Try getting quotes for cheaper cars in lower insurance groups (polos etc.) and also cars which are a bit "left field" in that new drivers don't usually buy them (and crash them, hence putting up insurance prices).

Did you try admiral/ admiral multicar? They are very good for me.

Well done, great pass in the time to had. I passed in 94, then again this year after a ban for Dangerous driving. So take care, as trust me it a pain in the rear end, if you end up where I have been.

TBH the £2400 quote sound's ok. USE compare website. and random choice, of prov spec car's. for quote before you buy a car.

My insurance when I passed was £1400 3rd party on a 1 litre Corsa :(

Get something cheaper/less powerful :)

thanks for all the advice guys, ill scrap the idea of the new car, was my sister that gave me the idea, Peugeot had an offer going called "Just add petrol" but being from N.Ireland this only applied to UK mainland, so that was that out the window. stayed on the phone chatting to a nice guy who offered me the 2010 peugeot for £189 per month.

I made a post a few months back about which first car to choose, now i still have a 1993 525i sitting at the front door, which i can get on traders insurance for £600 until april, so i think im gonna do this, as it will give me time to save for something.

Im going to sell the 525i and get a cheap run around like you guys advised, the BM is worth around 6/700 quid, its in decent condition and has lpg conversion done back in 2002.

Ive just done a quick online quote for a 1.2 clio and a 1.2 fiesta ect and it came back at a respectable £1100 roughly for each from M&S insurance, but im not sure if they cover N.Ireland

This was me trying to insure my first car, a lightly modified Ford Capri 2.8i, except i told them i'd had my licence 20 minutes, which was true!

Still, it only came to £2046 TPFT which beleive it or not i was really happy with at the time, lol.

Try the Post Office and Endsleigh. They usually offer decent quotes for over here.

Tho you're going to get raped for first-time insurance over here no matter who you go with. It's just a case of finding one with lube.

I managed to get my first car's insurance down to £1200 on a Focus 1.8 TDCI, I'm 22 also. With Highway Insurance by going through Motor Insurance Warehouse.

thought id give an update on the insurance hunt

My dad has a 2001 BMW 320i SE, and suggested i get a 3rd party only
quote for the car as he rarely uses it, well enough that i can use it for to and from my girls house at the weekends.

I didnt really like the idea as i was getting £2000+ for a 1.4 HDI peugeot.

So i called and got a nice lady who got me 3rd party only, 3000 annual millage for a grand total of £550.

Going over friday to sign the paperwork, im a happy bunny!
