5850 Or 6850

lol I missed his post wading through all the crap, good to see he took my advice.

You really are deluded.

Comedy gold arrogant post of 2010:D

If people took your advice they would be looking at their PSU and if they had one PCI-E power lead they would ditch it as they would think it was crap.

Wanna answer post 61 yet?

:D

Cleaver boy. Bought the 5850. It is the logical choice.
Down the line that MSI 5850 will fetch a lot more cash than a simpleton 6850.

Think that will be true... was thinking of selling my 5850 the other day, silly me just got all excited with it being xmas and all the new techy about... and I saw one go on the bay for £136 second hand... they still are quite a bit more expensive elsewhere.

Think im going to keep it!

WRONG

GTX570 is quicker than 480

SO it should be really

GTX580=490GTX
GTX570=485GTX

The GTX570 is the same speed as a GTX480:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_570/27.html

However,it has less RAM then the GTX480 and it is the overclock on the core which is making up the shortfall. Hence GTX475 OC is an accurate description.

The GTX580 is a GTX480 with all the shaders enabled with a 10% overclock and hence it is accurate to call it a GTX485 OC.

I just spat out my beer!:p

Aaah - drinking. That pretty much explains the whole thread :p.

LOL - This hole Easyrider started digging on page 1 can't be too far off a tunnel to Aus by now! :) I could do with escaping the British winter.

Yeah but, no but, yeah but, no but - it's got Display Port 1.2... and drives 6 monitors! Riiiiiiiiiiiight, that faaaaar outweighs the performance drop, the cooler, and the price. Uh huh. Where's a facepalm smiley when you need one?

:)

no its not mate.

570 is only slightly quicker than 480! BUT >>> QUICKER NON THE LESS, so it CANT be a smaller number. RAM size aint worth squat.

And btw 480gtx was called 480 because it had 480 CUDA CORES. If you want to get technical...

So really "logical" name for 580gtx is
512GTX

On the other hand 6870 AINT quicker than 5870 and 6850 aint quicker than 5850. Answers on the postcards if u see the difference.

citation needed. as far as im aware, the gtx480 was set in stone when nvidia were still aiming for 512 cores. after all, 480 is a somewhat logical / natural progression from 280, isnt it? got anything to back this claim up?

....i wonder why they didnt call the gtx470 a gtx 448 ?

99%(GTX480) and 100%(GTX475) are virtually the same so GTX475 OC is still an accurate description.

Also, the GTX460 does not have 460 cores and the GTX465 did not have 465 cores. The GTS450 does not have 450 cores either.

The GTX470 does not have 470 cores either.

The HD6000 series does have a weird naming scheme but then I suspect is something to do with AMD and the Bobcat and Llano CPUs.

OTH,Nvidia has done significantly more rebranding than AMD. The G92 spanned three rebranded generations.

i have now seen it all in the gpu forum....not even manufacturers now, its the actual cards.

Fanbois for card ranges i really worry :(

The 6850 is the 5770 replacement, the 5850 at such a low price point is a no brainer...if for some msguided reason anyone would think either card wouldn't be "old tech" in 3 months time anyway they rely havent got a clue what they are talking about.

With any PC upgrade all you can do is buy the best performing at the price you are willing to pay and lets face it GPUs have out paced games since most games are programmed for consoles, for me saying buy the latest tech even though it performs worse on most of the games you can play today is very bad advice and i would expect better, either be impartial or get the **** out, people come here for advice not bull****.

This GPU forum is embarrassing and lets what is a great community down.

Other 4-series cards are named from 480 on the performance scale. BUT THE 480 name came from its 480 cores.
Hence why nvidia skipped the 3-series and had it come out with full 512 cuda core fermi back in the day it wouldnt of been called the 480....

Like james.miller said before the previous high end Nvidia single GPU cards were called the GTX280 and GTX285.

The dual GPU GT200 card was the GTX295. This is why I would consider the GTX490 or GTX495 names would have been assigned to a dual GPU card.

Debate is where both parties take on the logic of the other easy.

An example of logic would be where one guy asks what is the best card, and a bunch of people answer 'its this' based on the most important criteria for a graphics card. FPS/cost.

Then another person comes in and says lo hold...this one has less power consumption! Despite that not counting at all in the grand scheme of things.

And lo! Tesselation! Twill be massive, but lynch that fool raven for predicting things totally wrongly!

Tesselation is a complete might, it does not mean much right now.

Fact you are sober is worse, point might have been made that the 6850 may have a better future outlook with new games, crossfires better and that it uses a tad less power but costwise its irrelevant if it is a single card in a standerd system. Your point could have been done in a post.

Much Hate i sense in this thread, Or it could be because it's 5am and i've been on re5 till now :D

6850 will bring more money down the line it has much better crossfire scaling and if you are selling in the future chances are the person buying the card will be looking to do exactly that, Every tom dick and harry own a 5850 now the markets flooded with them.
