New 6950 ower, upgraded from 4870x2

amd are in trouble.
They lost the W-lead.
They lost the single GPU crown with 480gtx.
They lost the quiet GPU solution.
And they "might" even lose the dual gpu battle.

It all looked so good in SEP 2009. :-(

OH stfu dude its becoming tiresome.... The cards are very quiet even in a Silverstone Grandia Case. AMD don't want the single GPU crown, if they did they'd be making chips 40% larger than they are now like Nvidia, and struggling with yields just as they are. I wouldn't say the 580 is exactly flooding the market right now.

The extra memory of the 6970 over its competitors and will add at least 30-40watt to the card, which will create heat that has to be dissipated simple as.

The 6970 looks pretty good to me here, so can you stop posting crap please.

lol AMD's powers efficiency is up there with Nvidia's now, considering it's a smaller core that's kind of poor.

30-40 watts or extra memory chips fella, memory needs power and when you consider the memory speed 30-40 watts might be an under estimation.

*Edit* Guru3d reckons the 6970 draws 207 watt, something don't seem right there.

You can test memory power usage can you? same goes for Nvidia and thier memory then, how many watts does 2GB DDR5 uses over 1.5GB DDR5, I bet it's a few watts at best. Unless you got some conclusive proof how many watts both camps memory use then it's just speculation. Let's take in to account that Nvidia use a 384 bit memory interface, I bet that adds some watts over the AMD 256 bit.

I am very happy with the performance and delighted I made the purchase.

Glad you're enjoying it mate:)

For all you little boys waiting for mummy to make you your lunch...

Just let the OP enjoy his new card.

Within seconds this thread becomes a fanboy fest and its sad.

You know who you are too.

Grow Up:rolleyes:

Due to the fact that we scrapped all FurMark results we are re-measuring all temp/dba/power tests with the new stress software. Again the Wattage displayed are the cards with the GPU(s) stressed 100%, showing only the GPU power draw, not the entire PC.

The 6970 isn't competing with the 580, which by the way has a higher power consumption according to your own charts... Its slightly faster than a 570, which it uses less power to.

http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...Downloads/Documents/downloads/green_gddr5.pdf

From what I can gather from this PDF each 2Gb (256MB) Gddr5 module will consume around 12 watt, maybe a touch more at their 6970 speeds, which at around their rated 1.5V seems about right.

You regard 30 watts as a big difference considering it's the faster card. From the reviews I have seen the 6970 and 570 are evens, wins here and there for both cards.

So they are not contributing much more to power draw than Nvida's memory setup I would guess.

Don't forget AMD are using powertune which fluctuates the clock speeds to keep within TDP. Most sites now disable any Nvidia power throttling with GPU-Z.

But PowerTune does step in to curb the power-draw when running an 'out-of-spec' application such as FurMark. The Radeon numbers look impressive, but the GPU isn't running at peak speeds all the time. Take a look at this text file and you will see that the Radeon HD 6970 flicks between a 598.5MHz core and the default 880MHz core speed.

From the HEX-S review.

And from Anandtech crysis powers usage.

what have you clocked your 5850 too?

my 5870 @ 900/1300 result below
10.12 drivers

Is that a "dry run" i.e. did you let the benchmark loop before running it? My 5850 is only at 850/1100. With your i7 and more RAM I presume, I'm very surprised tbh

Which when you consider this:

Seems about right.

Furmark is an anomoly and shouldn't really be used as a measuring tool as it makes these cards do things they weren't really designed to do.

some people including you are forgetting the 6000 series are running on non optimized drivers. every time they release a new series people think all the performance will be there in the release/first set of drivers. wrong!!! just remember the past 3000/4000/5000 series they release/first set of drivers didn't being the full performance, amd had to optimize the drivers so we could get the full performance.

oh and the 6950 is very quiet under load.

I like the company that gives me the most performance for least £.
And it aint AMD at the minute thats for sure.:D

Massive lol.

Edit: Just thinking about it, your opinion chops and changes every other day. What is wrong with you? Every post you spew out is just more meaningless, misleading drivel.

Glad the 4870x2 to 6950 move was worth it. I'm hoping to have enough cash left at the end of Jan to upgrade my 1gb 4870 to 6950. :)
