Lack of awareness on WW1/2

OP you have to remember that world wars took place long time ago and even those who were in their 20s during ww2 are probably in their 80s now or deceased. The environment of that period was very different from today's environment.
Most of the youngsters today have little to no interest in what happened in the past. They are more interested in ipods, mobile phones, computer games and technology (^^) along with xfactor, strictly come dancing etc than knowing what happened in the past. It just isn't that appealing anymore.

Conversely though, a lot of the younger generation have friends and family serving in Afghanistan and who have served in Iraq which is why a lot more younger people seem to be attending cenotaph parades.

Surely a bit of curiosity as to the markings on cenotaphs such as 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 will kick in for some ?

The thing i think for you guys up there is Probably because England Scotland and Wales have all been through Wars before. Especially since England is as old as it is.

Down here we do get a lot more Focus, Schools take kids to Remembrance day ceremonies and Anzac day is a HUGE thing down here. Mainly because WW1 and WW2 were and are our 2 biggest conflicts and was the first time Australia was put out on the world stage. Other then that we have been involved in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and thats as far as our history goes.
You guys have things like The battle of Hastings, the 100 year war, The Crusades. So maybe with that much History in 1 country it is a little bit Diluted. Although it shouldnt be.

WWII at least is covered as a history topic in junior school. Both my daughters learned all about it whilst they were in Year 4, my younger daughter (who is 9) has just finished doing a project on The Blitz.

I tell you something I don't understand about WW1, is that we blame the Germans!
If the archduke of the german-austrohungarian alliance was shot and they declared war on Serbia because of it, then Russia, France, and the Uk stepped in and it all kicked off, how was it Germany's fault? Surely Serbia should be blame for kicking it off to begin with????

It wasn't as simple as that.

We could easily blame Britain for being ambiguous if she will intervene or not.
Surely it would have knocked the Central powers confidence a bit if they knew a huge powers such as Britain would come charging in.

Germany had to strike when it did do have a chance at winning anyway, as Russia's railway plans were in effect and would soon cause Russia to militarily outstrip Germany in a matter of years.

As for learning dates, that's not even half the problem. Some people don't even know what the Cold War was.

GCSE History is, imo, a mixture of the two. There are some things in the curriculum that just deserve to be known by everyone, such as the events of the world wars, and there is also the teaching of "how to".

There's too much history to satisfy everyone, two posts up he wants cromwell in, I think the norman invasion and subsequent re-allignment of our nobles was terribly important, and still relevant.

The school system isn't there to create perfectly rounded little citizens, that's the job of their whole family and community.

I'd be shocked if they did that to me and to be honest unless it has any relevance on the job (ie historian) then I fail to see the point. You say this is an induction, not an interview so intellect and experience has already been gauge at interview and now this is introduction into the business and role. Therefore WTF does WW have to do with anything?

I agree we should never forget, but likewise I just do not see the relevance of the question.
It has a lot to do with it. You are a person, you will be working with other people, they want to gauge what type of person you are.

You are not a machine, you will inevitably end up having conversations with other people, who are also not machines, and if you are the sort of person that will rub people up the wrong way, they are not going to want to employ you.

That is "WTF" it has to do with the job and role.

I don't believe that knowng the start and end dates of WWII really gauge what type of person you are...

Why not?

Perhaps it is not the answer to the question they are interested in, and are more interested in your reaction?

Or if you really don't know the answer and give the wrong year/decade, then it could be an indication you have had your head in the sand all of your life and will have the social capacity of a common house brick.

Hows often do you talk about ww2?

It was a questionnaire?

In my school, we didn't learn about WWII until GCSE. Until then it was WWI, Coal mining in the area and the English civil war...if this is all they learned in school, and didn't really take an interest in history, why does it matter or show that they have a 'social capacity of a common house brick'?

If that's so, might aswell ask 'Do you post frequently on OcUK?' :D

I can't say many conversations I have had about WWII have been about when it started and ended. Why it started and why it ended maybe, and a glance past the dates but that's it.

If anyone wants an insight to the horrors of WWI then I strongly recommend reading Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.

It mainly covers the battle of the Somme. Before reading it I obviously had a general understanding of the war and how it was fought (trench warfare and all that), but this book really does make you understand why we have Remembrance Day and the hell people must have gone through at the time. It really is shocking and seriously opened my eyes.

you don't know you're even born

B@

Would that be the case though? Obviously the jews/slavics were the whipping boys but would he have not left the other countries to do their own thing. He admired our country like no other. I'm not sure of his intentions but i can't imagine every single person that was'nt blonde haired and blue eyed would have been killed or used as slaves.

I bought birdsong a few years ago & agree it's a fantastic book & a must read. Albeit the story is fiction (with a bit of romance) it does draw you in to the period & what times may have been like in the trenches etc. Might dig it out again one day.
