The current budget crap ive got on the front of my astra are going to have to be binned as there rubbish in anything but bone dry conditions they seem to have no grip at all in theses snow/slush conditions, so was just wondering if anyone could point me towards some decent all season 195/60/r15's. been looking at the "VREDESTEIN QUATRAC" the 2's or 3's seem to get decent reviews online. anyone running these? anyother ones that would be good?

You will need 4.
This.

However, I'd just get a new set of summer tyres.
Or a set of winter tyres too if you feel like splashing out. I don't really see the appeal of all-season tyres.

Can you explain why "The current budget crap ive got on the front of my astra..." that "...seem to have no grip at all in theses snow/slush conditions..." are okay to use on the rear?

I'm confused. You're replacing the front tyres.
And then you're going to put them on the back? What?

the front ones are federals which are only about a year old so theres abit of life in them yet, but they seem to have very little traction when pulling off in these conditions and in the wet. now the cars front wheel drive so if they go on the rears and i get better fronts all will be good

Having better tyres on the front sounds like a brilliant idea... Until you forget about the ditchfinders on the back and LOOS into a ditch.

ive got a set of nokian winter tyres on the front, and my normal eagle f1's on the back.

on snow the back steps out a bit, but the extra grip on the front helps control it, and ive not got stuck yet!

from experience i would definitely say 2 winter tyres on the front is better than no winter tyres at all, you just need to understand the limitations of the car and drive to the conditions

yeh but the ones on the back now are even worse than the front ones so in that theroy the front ones are going to be atleast a bit better and have a bit more grip. federal aint a ditch finder, yeh there not a top name but they aint the worst out there. forget it guys all i wanted to know is vredstein a decent tyre 16 posts and i still got no answer. you guys crack me up:D

You just don't like the answer you've been given, so you are going to have a cry about it. The correct answer is that you should replace all 4 tyres, not have 2 rubbishy ones on the back and two good all seasons on the front. This could cause unpredictable handling.

I was reading the other day that you must be very careful with M+S marked budget tyres - apparently the standards applied to M+S tyre performance are lower than those applied to conventional tyres. Perhaps they are given more leeway in dry tests or something - so some of the super ***** brands mark the tyres up as M+S to pass the already pathetic European standards. Therefore avoiding budget M+S tyres is a very prudent step to take.

Do it properly.

Advice from the AA:

Winter tyres must be fitted in sets of four. Fitting only one pair will significantly affect the balance and stability of the car.

Good God man.
Just buy 4 new proper summer and be done with it.

Cheap M+S tyres are lethal. They failed ADAC's winter tyre test due to absolutely frightening wet performance.

Michelin Alpin A4
Pirelli Sottozero Serie II
Continental WinterContact TS830
Vredestein Snowtrac 3
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D
Goodyear UltraGrip 7 Plus
Nokian WRG2

All the above are good winter tyres that rate well in tests.
