4WD Fever

How was it correct?

The FWD car gained 5.8% weight when it became AWD (85kg)
The RWD car gained 7% weight when it became AWD (101kg)

Edit: Oh yea, GREAT editing there, well done.

For the rest of the forum, MikeHiow denied that my example demonstrated that the RWD car gained more weight. He then edited his post so not to appear so wrong.

There are hardly any other good examples - there are not many examples of two cars in the same class for which one is available in FWD and AWD and the other is available in RWD and AWD. I can do 5 Series v A6 if you want?

It certainly seems to me that your assumption that FWD gains more weight when converted to AWD is simply not true.

I edited my post a mere 30 seconds after I posted it, realising I had gotten your figures confused. There is no need to get smart about it.

Apart from Audi, BMW, Merc, VW and Volvo? :p

A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8..
E Class, S Class..
Golf, Passat, Phaeton
BMW iX etc..
V70/S60..

They're out there if you can be arsed to find it, but I doubt there's any point really :)

I've already done Audi v BMW and it wasn't good enough for Mike, S class has no comparable rival thats FWD and AWD, Golf is Haldex so not really like for like comparing with something thats full time 4WD, etc etc.

I picked the example that was the most even without any external factors. It demonstrated that it isnt true to say that FWD always adds more weight when converting to AWD than RWD does.

Hi there

Grip in snow, the biggest element in play here is tyres, not FWD, RWD or AWD, its the tyres that makes the biggest difference.

But yes 4WD on snow tyres do drive very well and due to their setup can be driven at quite some speed too if your brave.

But look at Porsche 911, absolutely superb in snow with winter tyres due to immense traction of having engine over back wheels. :)

Uh.. Phaeton and Audi A8 for a start are available on both FWD and AWD..

In response to the original post, yes, it would sway me. Enough ot buy a 4WD? Probably not, seeing as the cars I like don't seem to be readily availably in 4WD.

Given that my car use is limited to 4/5 months a year, if 1 month of that is with a lot of snow and ice, 4WD sounds quite attractive.

The A8 is also FWD? Crikey, so it is. Epic lol, an FWD car like that?! Crazy.

Not quite sure why a car fitted with a Haldex Coupling isn't comparable to something with 'full time' 4WD, especially when we're talking about weight

Because it's MikeHiow, he'd go mad if there was anything at all he pick up on, therefore i had to find an example with exactly the same type of 4wd system in exactly the same class of car, etc etc.

I removed that second part, as there's no transfer box with a Haldex Coupling..

Re: Audis - they've always been FWD, hence why they handle like crap :p

I always thought the A8 was Quattro only across the whole range. Did we get the FWD ones in the UK? Perhaps thats where my impression came from.

Poor Audi, they are nearly nice but they just lack the fundamentals. Noticed that A5's were sub £20k these days, thouht ooh, then remembered it was an Audi.

Not sure about the new model, but certainly Mk1 and MkII 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 were sold with FWD in the UK.
All diesels and V8/W12 were Quattros.

It is a shame, because they could be truly amazing. Well the R8 is an exception, that is fantastic.

But they could make cars like RS4, RS5, TT RS, S5, S4 and even lower S3 truly epic by first of all making their steering give more feedback and less electronic assistence.

Change the Haldex for a true proper Quattro 4WD system.

Dial out the bloody understeer, make them more neutral or oversteer.

Apart from that they look gorgeous, sound superb, are generally built well and generally go very well.

The RS4 had the steering thing sorted didnt it? I remember the RS4 giving everyone really high hopes for the future of 'drivers' Audis.

Then they forgot again.

I've driven 2 RS4's the estate and saloon and to me the steering feel was still poor. Yes its better than other Audi's which are simply completely disconnected to any feel.

I found the RS4's steering very similar to the Corvettes, both electrically assisted and both with not much feel but well weighted. In comparison M3 CSL was better as was the Mustang. Next to a car like a Porsche the steering feedback is not even in the same league.

But if all Audi's felt like the RS4 would at least be a good start, but ideally they should be aiming for Porsche/Lotus feel really especially when making drivers/performance/supercar type stuff.

I tend to buy a 4x4 in the months leading up to winter, before they start getting expensive, then sell it once the weather is starting to improve for a small net profit.

Bit on a tangent here, but when would you say the prices tend to come back down from the snowy mickey take they are at the moment?

I've been looking for a 4x4 ready for next summer, but the prices have all practically doubled with the bad weather. :(
