Somebody mentioned Dr. Who in the Favourite Childhood TV threads and it got me wondering...

I was born in '63, so naturally my Doctor has always been Jon Pertwee. His stint on the series were some of the most scary moments on TV - I particularly remember having nightmares about Autons walking down my street. Tom Baker didn't do it for me (blasphemy, I know - he's been the most popular Doctor by far). Baker was just too comedic for me, and the succession of progressively worse actors in the role just about killed it off, culminating in the abysmal Sylvester McCoy - and I'd loved him in Vision On!

So, Pertwee it is ...but wait. Something strange just happened.

I avoided the revamped series totally, expecting further shatteration of childhood memories. Didn't see a single episode of Ecclestone or Tennant.

Then I got an iPad and installed iPlayer. Cue Matt Smith...

I was staggered by how fantastically the lad pulled it off. He's an absolutely, extraordinarily good Doctor - it's like he was born for the role.

Watching that one, all-too-brief series left me wanting for more, so I watched the re-runs of Tennant. My god - he was great too!

My preferences have changed after many years - it's now Smith (by a whisker), Tennant then Pertwee.

Can't wait for the Chrimbo special now :D

So, then - who's your Doctor?

(eep - that turned into a bleedin' novel somewhere along the line, was supposed to be a simple question ^__^)

Pertwee, closely followed by Sylvestor McCoy (he was the one around when I was young).
I have to say Matt Smith is excellent, he really pulled off the Dr's flopping from loving the human race to despising it, which I dont think Ecclestone or Tennant did particularly well.

Even though I'm sure it was around when I was growing up I never really fancied watching it. A bit like Star Wars really. So my first was Christopher Ecclestone for a few episodes only.

even though I loved and watched the olds one and I've only seen a few of the new ones around peoples houses or when my flat mate has the remote hidden. But I think David Tennant has been the best, followed by matt smith as he's very quirky and fits the dr well. even if it is bloody annoying.

Tennant by a mile, I only starting warming to Smith during the last episodes of the last season.

Favourite old Doctor, Tom Baker.

Jon Pertwee followed by 'the Baker'.

And the original creepy title music. Not the lame big orchestral numbers.

Gotta be Matt Smith for me, and I'm glad to meet someone who wouldn't say it's because I 'missed' the older doctors. I've seen a lot of the old episodes, though probably less than half, and Matt Smith's my favourite by a country mile. Tennant's good, but his hair annoys me,

Being young I have only seen the new ones.

I missed all of the Ecclestone ones but my favourite between David Tennant and Matt Smith is obviously David Tennant because well he's hilarious.

Pertwee was obviously my favourite.

Although for some reason I can't for the life of me remember anything about the plots or what the doctor even looked like.

Nice photo of Sarah Jane but one Dr had an assistant called 'Perry'?

She was always falling over and had a grand pair of knockers.

But Who's assistant was she? I thought Colin Baker but can't find anything on Google?

I'm only 25 so never watched any of the old stuff. And the new series never appealed when it came back with Christopher Eccleston or any of the ones after him.

I caught one episode once as the wife wanted to watch it (they go to Mars I think and the ebil water monsters want to munch em all up) and I promised myself that I'd never watch another episode ever again. Not going to go into why as that would just ruin the thread.

It was spelled "Peri", which is why you couldn't find it. She was a companion of Doctors 5 and 6 - Peter Davison and Colin Baker respectively.

You had to watch the original circa 1970/80 to understand Dr Who properly.

The modern twist appeals to the Harry Potter generation.

They played it loads when we were kids. Although annoyingly they played one about 30 times more often, somethibg to do with slugs in a welsh mine.
