Sennheiser CX400II quality issues

Urgh, I politely request a refund and mention my concerns and so get the following reply:

Dear Customer,

We apologies for the hassle caused, we will report this to our supplier & send out a replacement + a prepaid S.A.E to send the faulty earphones back...

tip.tech

Thanks but no thanks...

Dear tip.tech,

Thank you for your reply. I'm afraid I cannot, however, accept your offer of a replacement. As per your return policy, and as previously requested, I would like a refund for the full amount paid. Failure to adhere to this will unfortunately require the matter to be escalated with ******. However, I trust such steps will not be needed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Why do people insist on wasting time? I only saw the message two hours after he'd sent it. I bet he's gone and posted the 'replacement' already

What's the grill like that covers the drivers? ie where it inserts into your ear. Does it looks like perforated silver foil, or is it like woven mesh?

They were from the marketplace, albeit from a seller with a very good feedback record. You do wonder though, how many of those who who've left positive feedback have unknowingly bought good fakes. I have to admit, I was unaware the market was so saturated with counterfeits before I bought these. It's so frustrating!

I know how you feel, I once bought a pair of CX500's from the bay for less than £15. had my suspicions tbh but had a punt, they were almost impossible to tell that they were fake except for one seal on the packaging and the inline volume control crackled. Still woulnt have known what to look for if i hadnt checked out other fakes online

If you have never had descent headphones then you will not be able to tell on sound quality (they still sounded better than the stock ipod heaphones)

I feel your frustration. so many trusting buyers being conned and leaving positive feedback to these sellers...

...I still have the fake pair for use when I go kiteboarding at the beach, not gunna rick destroying a good pair of earphones am I

You could just tell them you are going to return under the DSR. If he has posted already then you just pop both into the return bag.

I'm outside the DSR timeframe unfortunately. Nevertheless, I shouldn't need it. Got the 'replacement' through very quickly. Not willing to send anything back until I get a confirmation that a refund will be given though.

It's a woven mesh.

I had a genuine pair of Cx300IIs and they fell apart after a couple of months. Very disappointed considering the high quality Sennheiser normally offer.

Ah, tell tale sign. Definitely fake then, although I think you pretty much knew that anyway by now. :) The grill should be perforated, rather than woven mesh.

I know the original CX400s were perforated, but I thought the design for the IIs had changed and was now a woven design. Who knows?! I'm pretty convinced that I won't be able to tell the difference visually to be honest, so I won't think about it too much :p

Surprising, mine lasted me 6 months, about a whole 4 months longer than any other in ears have ever lasted me. What was faulty with yours? Usually I find the cable breaks around the jack, the CX300-II's are thicker in this area hence why they didn't die as quick, it was actually the metal of the jack which 'snapped' internally rather than the cable breaking - very odd really.

I bought a pair of the Adidas ones for the gym and the 3.5mm jack came out from an impact into my pocket even though they are suppose to be (shock proof).

Worst 60 pound I have ever spent :(

Well just an update on this. I received the proper pair today, and they are very definitely genuine :p

Unfortunately I have already returned the others, so can't do a photo comparison, but I have to say based on cosmetics alone, I don't think anyone would have been able to tell the difference if they didn't have a genuine pair handy at the same time. It is worrying that the fakes are of such a quality, but it does seem to concur with a lot of the other opinions I've found on the internet. The funny thing is, the carry case that came with the fakes was made of real leather, but the genuine Sennheiser one is just PVC stuff, albeit of a higher quality stitch and logo.

I've detailed the other minute differences below:

Fake: Most of the cable sheaths had little offcuts of plastic still attached from the manufacturing process. The genuine ones have smoothed edges everywhere.

Fake: The volume slider falls off (lol). I've tried the same with the genuine pair, and the slider is much more firmly fastened.

Fake: On the rubber thing you're meant to use to wrap the headphones around when not in use, the Sennheiser logo is off centre. On the real pair, it is dead centre.

Fake: On the plastic bit that splits the main cable into separate ones for L/R earpieces, there is no space between 'CX' and '400' whereas on the genuine pair there is.

Fake: Using the volume slider during playback induces crackling.

For all the other supposed 'tell-tale' signs, eg. mesh on the earphones, rounded edges on logos etc, I couldn't find any discernible difference whatsoever. I may have been able to if I'd had the two at hand to compare next to each other, but I doubt it would've been anything spectacular.

I guess the thing that convinced me most though was that when I listened to the genuine pair for the first time, I found myself inadvertently beaming from ear to ear. The sound quality was that good. Money well spent.

Great, glad you got a genuine pair eventually! :)

Good point about the build quality of fakes. Closer they get to the real thing, will make spotting fakes hard for people not in the know.

Exactly. There's sod all that people like eBay or Amazon Marketplace can do about it either, other than respond to specific complaints, which I doubt they'd do anyway. I guess awareness is key, but as I think I've proved myself, it doesn't exist in general :( Might be a worthwhile story for the likes of BBC Click or similar.

I've been looking to buy these and just come across this thread. Has anyone else had problems buying from Amazon?

Tim, was it the seller that eventually sent you a genuine pair? Any chance you could tell us who the seller was?

Cheers..

Buying direct from the rainforest is ok, but buying from one of their market place sellers is a big no no as far as counterfeit is concerned.

fakes may look similar but they never sound the same, that's where the dollar is lol.

I have a pair and for the money they are great, some would say a bit bass heavy but I actually like that and they sound nothing like the 50p apple set lol.

+1 to what Auraomega said.
