Strange Inspiron laptop behaviour

My girlfriend has an Inspiron 1720 laptop with windows 7 on.

It's been fine until just recently when it started showing a strange jerking behaviour, the most noticable symptom of which is that every second or so the mouse freezes momentarily. Really really irritating.

This behaviour also applies to the trackpad and can also be noticed when windows is starting as the startup sound stutters in time with the mouse. Also if the HDD is doing something and accessing constantly (HDD light on solidly), that also stops momentarily (HDD light flicks off for an instant). Play an MP3 or something and it stutters. Basically the whole system seems to halt momentarily. Like the system is getting constant interrupts at ~1 second intervals.

I've updated all the drivers and fiddled around a whole load until finally to check that I wasn't going mad I stuck in my Ubuntu live CD and booted into Ubuntu.

It does the same thing!

So it's clearly not a windows/driver issue but surely hardware?

Any ideas please anyone, I'm at my wits end with this!

Fornowagain, thanks, I've run memtest86 on it, everything checks out fine. Wouldn't hurt to try removing each RAM stick in turn just to eliminate that though.

Hmmm... having trouble agreeing with you there at the moment

Had my Dell Ispiron 1720 fully modded now , had for 3 years not a single problem , runs like a dream , my only complain it does not have HDMI output

Are you sure the chipset drivers are up to date?

Could be a failing hard drive.

Press F12 on bootup and run the dell diagnostics, see if they pick up on anything.
