That's the rock and the hard place.

You can't appease both sides.

I've done it myself, fired off an RTM to the mods after a firey debate got closed with me accusing them in the heat of the moment of defending racists yadada.

They can't win, if it closes on one side the extremists decry the end result.

If the more liberal 'lose', it's all the same.

is this a song you are writing or something?

(we need sheep smilies! go mods go!)

Regarding the muslim bashing/racism, it's been like that for many years, it's never really going to change so, again, you either ignore it or just avoid browsing GD.

There is nothing racist about bashing Muslims, because you are bashing a bunch of people who believe in imaginary beings, which to me is a sure sign of insanity ... just like the Christian and Jewish beliefs.

No-one is bashing Arabs as a race, they are bashing a bunch of morons believing in imaginary things, be then white, black, jewish (race wise) or arab.

Pirsig put it correctly "when one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion"

Hmmm, so you think that bashing people's personal beliefs, a lot of the time deeply felt as part of their very being is fair game then?

If the belief is not based on fact then yes it is fair game

We bash people who believe in UFOs, in conspiracy theories, in little green men, in Yeti, etc ... but oh no, we can't bash people who believe in some random imaginary powerful beings.
Why should religion be treated any different to the above? As I said, Pirsig put it correctly.

The idea in life is to respect other peoples beliefs, even if you personally don't hold them yourself. This is where you're going wrong.

I don't bash anyone for their beliefs because I'm, quite simply, not a berk... :p

They are free to hold whatever belief they want, but I am not going to stop giving my opinion on their belief and am not going to change how, where, when, and why I do things.

EDIT: For instance, why should I not be allowed to post in the Ramadan thread that I'm going to go and have a nice bacon sarnie ... yet it is perfectly fine for me to post that in any other thread.

I don't think anyone's neccessarily asking you to do that, just respect that they have a different opinion/belief to yours - and that it's just as valid as yours.
