Anyone Dislike Christmas?

I dislike consumer-mas with a passion... 20 years in retail does that to you. :-)

But I do like the idea of a mid-winter festival celebrating the fact the shortest day is over and spring's on its way again. I also absolutely love the fact that even in built up areas there are a few, precious hours when you can open your door and hear... nothing. No traffic, just the sound of the world as it used to be before the 20th century.

Then a plane goes overhead and the illusion's shattered. But I'm old enough to remember when Sunday was a quiet (and often blissfully dull!) family day for just about everyone. Now the only day that's true is Christmas Day.

Which might be just as well for most families. :-)

Of course the main purpose of Christmas is to prepare you for New Year's Eve... the most depressing day of the calendar. You drink to forget, not celebrate. ;-)

PS Glad I'm not the only one who always feels uncomfortable with the whole present thing... both giving and receiving.

I dunno actually, christmas is probably more depressing than new years eve.

Christmas is the most depressing time of the year, stuck at home with the family (not that that's bad but it gets boring after a few days), all your friends miles away and if you have another half they are miles away too, if not then you stew on the fact previous christmasses you did have someone to look forward to.

Can't wait til I don't have to watch crap TV and can go out and have fun again!

You're assuming everyones friends are loads of miles away. It's no where near as bad when they're not.

I find NYE much worse, always over hyped IME.

I celebrate Yule, Mithras being born, and partake in the feast of the son of Isis but not Christ-mas, seeing as I am not Christian.

Maybe, but that's my experience since I left school about 5 years ago.:p

Is great when you're a kid. Crap when grown up & left home & on ur own. (beans on toast for one xmas dinner). Great again when you have your own kids & want to make it special for them. Not so great again when they grow up.

Still look forward to xmas & enjoy us all being off work etc & being together. Enjoy the pressies still, food, booze. But what a hassle it now seems getting there!!!

I also hate one aspect of xmas now. Reflecting at the time on how self-indulgent we are, using xmas as an excuse. I feel guilty at times knowing there are the less fortunate out there while we're stuffing our faces. (No violins here please, the wife just calls me Vic Meldrew) Still, along with the holiday period, xmas is also a period to look forward to & which makes the rest of our mundane working (etc) lives that more bearable.

Two weeks off Work Gaming GREAT

Have an intense dislike for Christmas (I smile through gritted teeth for my children's benefit) the rampant commercialism and frothing mouth monsters it turns people into makes me despair for humanities existence. Facebook news feed is currently full of pictures of monstrous piles of presents with a fake tree balanced on top of said pile somehow.

And no doubt when the supermarkets reopen they will be choke full of Easter eggs, so bah!

The commercialism etc. sucks balls, but tbh that's not really reason to HATE it, is it?

You get time off work, time with family, excuse to eat and get drunk, people generally on good form on the day etc. It might be a monster, but it has its good side.

I'm not religious, and loathe the decorating and all that **** (I allow the wife to do it herself to appease her), but really...I get time off to relax and game and whatever. How can I then turn around and belittle that?

Love it! Love the food, love seeing my family. I come from a fairly large family, so though I see my parents and brothers and sisters individually throughout the year, christmas is one of the few times we are all in one place.
Love giving and receiving presents. Can't remember the last time I disliked a present- I always like things more because they have been bought for me.
I think I really enjoyed Christmas growing up, so the happy memories mean I still have a very positive attachment to it now.

I used to love it when i was a kid. My family didn't have much money and so Christmas was the only time I'd get toys etc.

The thing I hate about it now is having to sit in a room with my mum, 2 uncles, sister and brother, who all smoke and don't give a crap that I'm asthmatic.

To add to this, I have to endure hours upon hours of crap TV. I detest soaps of any kind, but on Christmas day I have to watch soap after soap. Made even worse due to the fact every soap takes Christmas as an opportunity to make the program extra depressing .

Only thing that makes it bearable is the awesome food :). Oh and the beer helps ;).

I lost the Christmas 'buz' at 23 (alittle late i know) when my sis spent it with her boy friend in Spain, so it was me & my parents. It didnt 'feel' the same without her & my Mum could kind of tell i wasnt really in the x-mas spirit. Since then i've felt the cost of buying presents (work, car, bills to pay etc) & sort of feel guilty for all those years my parents must have hated x-mas while i was shouting "i want, i want".

Its all about family, thats my conclusion anyway.
