Great Actors

Robert De Niro wasn't in Insomnia?

Ahem yeah, it was actually Pacino! Egg on my face and all that.

I think Tom Cruise is a solid actor, but has he ever really pushed emotional depths the way the likes of Pitt/DiCaprio/the rest have? I've not seen some of what are rated as his 'better' films, like Magnolia, but from what I understand, the don't push his character as much as, say, Seven or Shutter Island did for the other two. Or am I wrong?

Can't tell you if you're wrong, just see it for yourself. Cracking film and solid performances all round so worth seeing. Although there's other films where people can say he did great such as Born on The Fourth of July, Rain Man and even Jerry Maguire. In terms of ratings I would say that I'd rate Pitt higher than him though and Leonardo Di Caprio is a decade younger than both of them so he can still push the envelope even further with his career.

Bit of a random one but based on his performance in Chopper alone, Eric Bana has the potential to be something special.

Was actually toying with the idea of mentioning him, he had a solid performance in Munich but has done an awful lot of commercial work since then and think it may be little too late for him now to become one of the greats.

How could I forget Munich? It is true what you say though, I think his stock has fallen somewhat. And from watching Love the Beast (documentary about him racing his beloved car), it seems that acting isnt the be all and end all for him. Shame though, because he was utterly brilliant in Chopper.

Cruise is good in certain roles - give him a cocky type who messes up, finds what is important in life and wins the day in the end, and he excels. Anything else he is pretty ordinary.

I think Christian Bale is one of the best actors of this generation. Sure Terminator was a dud, but who wouldn't have signed up to be in a Terminator film?

Denzel Washington too - he may only play variations on a theme, but Clint Eastwood has had a 40 odd year career doing that!

I'm surprised there's no love for Steve Buscemi, he's a great actor and has had some outstanding performances. Viggo Mortensen too.

Also, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and (much as it pains me to say it) Leonardo Dicaprio.

Of the youger actors, only Ryan Gosling impresses me. I figured he would be totally overshadowed by Hopkins in Fracture and he was superb. Ryan Reynolds has potential, but he's picked some really awful films. Now he's becoming big, perhaps that will change.

Philip Seymour Hoffman
Johnny Depp
Tom Hanks
Leonardo DiCaprio
Sam Rockwell
Bill Murray
Frances McDormand
William H. Macy

Robin Williams I feel is often under rated. He was great in films like The World According to Garp, Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo and Insomnia.

Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Harvey Keitel, Willem Dafoe - Four actors that basically accept any work given to them, some of it is superb, some of it is utter drivel, but I will always watch films that those four appear in as they steal the film, they are never, ever bad in any acting role in my opinion.

Daniel Day-Lewis is a compelling presence on screen
Good performances over the last few years from Michael Sheen, Viggo Mortensen, Robert Downey Jr and Hugo Weaving
Clive Owen was great in Children of Men and Sin City
Colin Firth was superb in A Single Man
And of course two of the busiest actors around - Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor.

But I'm disappointed to see no love here for the greatest:

Hayden Christiansen - You Rock!!

Damn, how could I have forgotten?! Jeff Bridges. I know I said that Gary Oldman is my favourite actor of all time, but really, it would we be a toss up between Jeff Bridges and Gary Oldman.

Imagine my excitement when I watched the Contender, Jeff Bridges as the President, and Gary Oldman as Chairman of the confirmation committee. Absolutely awesome.

Brad pitt and dicaprio for modern actors,

and say what you want about de niros recent films, but the amount of preparation he did for films like taxi driver, raging bull, deerhunter etc was immense.

I think DiCaprio is superb. Absolutely superb.

However, a good friend of mine is absolutely insistent that Gerard Butler is better than him and has impressed a much wider variety of roles.... :o

Gangs of New York, Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, Inception, The Aviator, The Quick and the Dead.... I think that is a pretty decent variety!

I suppose I have done this slightly wrong, there are three generations of actors now. You have the old guys, then the DiCaprios, Clooneys etc, then a distinct lack of anyway.

Of the 'next generation', I really rate Jason Gordon-Levitt. Thought he was brilliant in (500) Days of Summer, and even better in Inception.

Sam Rockwell was phenomenal in Moon and I could see him becoming amazing.

Another vote for Leo. I've rated him very highly ever since The Aviator.

For me it would be de niro, pacino, sadly in recent years de niro has faded a bit, quite impressed with leonardo di caprio lately, also like liam neeson and morgan freeman, and daniel day lewis, an absolute perfectionist, dont think ive ever seen him in a bad film.
