Brother in law has just inherited £5k and has decided he is going to build himself a decent gaming rig, despite doing qualifications in the subject he seems to know very little. So I turn to you for advice :D

I would say he is looking at £1500 as a top level for it. including keyboard and mouse. Lets not include a monitor for now.

Use will be for gaming and things like editing videos for youtube, creating levels/mods for halflife etc.

So, any suggestions? I've told him he probably doesn't need to spend all of that to get something half decent, and to really ignore his friend that is telling him he needs at least 12gb of ram etc.

tried to save money with the case so you could get a 580 + decent mmo mouse+keyboard.tell him to drop in a good soundcard in a years time.

i have that case and i had to buy 1 200mm fan and a 140mm for the side + dust filter for the side which made it £90.very nice case i could have perhaps put £50 to it and got a haf x but i really did not have that budget with a 580.

You can get a gaming system without a single bottleneck (CPU, GPU, Memory) for less than £1000...

But if thats the budget you have... wait a few weeks for sandybridge i7 cpus...

Buy an i7 sandybridge... with 2x solid state drives in raid (twice the speed of solid state drives) a top of the range mobo and the best GPU you can get!

Like I said, £1500 is really the top of the budget, if he can build a decent rig with less then great.

Tbh I don't understand why he is really bothering, the only games he really plays is Minecraft and halflife 1 games & mods. If you've suggestions for decent rigs below the budget, please post them :)

for that price this is a killer gaming machine, more power than anybody would ever need and well last a long time

no one, i mean no one would ever need this much power

don't waste 1.5k on a machine for such a simple task, and also one that will be outdated on january 9th when sandy bridge is released.

Even something like that would be enough for your brother in law's needs, just change the graphics card, means if anything goes wrong he can get OCuk to fix it instead of you. ;)

Might not even be much point in waiting for SB considering you'll have to pay a price premium for a SB chip which you can overclock. The i5 at 4GHz will be faster than most of the sandy bridge chips at stock clocks.
