New PS3 , things i need to know ?

Ive bought my son *cough* myself *cough* a PS3 for xmas ,we already have a 360 and wii so i thought id make it a full set :)

anyways, he had a quick go on move yesterday and he seems to like it,ive been on it this morning mainly to look at the media options as thats what i'll be using it for most,first off i updated it over PSN , then i plugged a new USB 3 WD passport with some AVI's on it and the PS3 didnt recognise it at all,so i plugged in my older USB 2 passport in and it recognised it but said the drive was empty even tho theres loads of avi files on it ?

so what do i have to do to get the ps3 to read these passports and to display the files on them ?

any other media related tips about this new PS3 would be much appreciated too :)
 
thanks, i tried triangle and it said it found files but still wouldnt display them,at this moment in time ive no interest in streaming from my pc, i just want to stick some avi's on a HDD and play them on the ps3 via usb like i can on the 360.
 
do the drives need to be formatted in any particular way ?

EDIT: quick google suggests i need to format the newer drive to fat32 , gunna do that now,just found a quick youtube vid that tells me how to display files too so gunna try that :)

FAT32 is right, and you can either do the Triangle -> Display all method, or you can set put the files in "PS3/VIDEO" folders (I think) and have them show up without that. :)
 
according to my latest google search , USB 3 drives dont work on ps3's ?

im currently tranfering files over to my usb2 passport which worked fine using the display all option
 
Even though your video files are in an AVI container, the PS3 still might not like them depending on frame rate/codec/resolution and all that gubbins. If they conform to the DivX spec you should be all right.

I don't think you need the "PS3" folder actually. So just sticking them in a folder called "VIDEO" makes them display.

This is from memory, so you might want to go and look it up as well. :p

ah right sry , i thought u ment put them in a "VIDEO" folder within the ps3, so renaming a folder on the HDD to VIDEO does see the folder im doing it now , what if i want multiple folders on the HDD ? what would i name them then ?

sry for newb questions but weve never owned a ps3 before , its all a lot more simple on the 360 :D
 
I think it's just Sony have a different way of doing things (like apple) So we ain't used to them.

Only problem I had with ps3 was not playing a lot of my video files over hdd (some will work.. others it won't like)
 
I'm looking to pick up a ps3 in the sales but i literally havn't found a single decent deal.

Has anyone seen any bundle bargains?
 
Get PS3 Media Server sorted, it's a great little program and so much more convenient than than sticking things on your hard drive to watch em.
 
mate its just as easy to push triangle on the selected external drive and select display all and then just navigate through all the folders, just like you would on your 360. instead of mucking around with folder names. make sure you select it from the video drop down.

as for the playing of files. the ps3 will always display the files and if unable to play will show you a classic crossed out circle

I can see that streaming would be much easier BUT we often watch stuff on our WD media player in the bedroom which is not connected to any network so i often just throw things onto the HDD coz we never know where we will actually be watching the tv shows/movies :)
