What happened to Master Chief at the end of Halo 3?

I just finished this game and must have missed something because at the final cut scene at the ceremony it seemed to indicate that Master Chief was dead..!

Can anyone tell me what happened?

iirc after the credits u should have gotten another cut scene, with the MC in the remaining part of the cruiser talking to Cortana and he goes into Stasis, which it pretty much how Halo 1 started.

Complete it on Legendary.

Was it only when completed on Legendary you get the cut scene ?

I don't remember, which difficulty I saw it on

You get a scene for each difficulty, but you get a bit more when completed on legendary.
