I'm a bit miffed that my new MSI 5850, that I got to replace a HIS 4870, is making a constant buzz/hiss noise when in games. The 4870 was doing it too.

Performed a reformat before installing 5850. Problem has been ongoing with 4870 for multiple Catalyst driver versions since owning card from second hand.

I've taken PC apart and placed components on cardboard and the noise definitely seems to be coming from the centre area of graphics card, or closer to top edge. Have tried it in both PCI Express slots.

If I'm unable to test card in another system, could the motherboard slot be a factor? Or PSU not providing sufficient current?
DFI LanParty Junior P45-T2RS
Corsair HX450

Details about PCI Express slot from DFI:
•2 PCI Express (Gen 2) x16 slots dimensionally with x8 transfer rate lanes only (8-lane ports)
- 2-way CrossFire: One slot operating at x8 (8-lane port) or two slots each operating at x8 (8-lane ports) bandwidth

Not had any system crashes, just the annoying noise.

Edit 1: Tested 5850 with a 650W XFX XXX edition PSU. Same problem

Could be wrong but u need a 550w psu for the 5850, you have a 450w so that could be your problem.
Have you check the fan speed?, try dropping the speed down by 5% so if that's takes it away?.

The thing with PSU wattage recommendations from ATI/Nvidia is they have to cover all the different PSU brands, including the el cheapo £20 unknown makes. So they bump up the requirements to provide more headroom for the lower quaility models. But I hope to test system and card with a XFX silly wattage model next week just to rule it out.

Capacitors 100%

I'm hoping so, as don't want to replace system yet.

I wouldnt necesarily worry about it, as long as its not really loud. I've had PSUs and GPUs whine that have gone onto last many more years until retired!

I'd second that. My old gtx 260 used to be the same from day one. Gameplay wasn't as bad as say a pic/menu being displayed beforehand. Did me fine (& still is) with no probs for over a year of use till I upgraded.

Back of the MSI box states 500w minimum for a 5850 but like above if you've got a decent psu 450watts will do it!

If the problem is occuring accros different graphics card I would probalby think the Mobo or PSU!

Can you try the graphics card in a friends system... if its fine its not the graphics card... which would leave the mobo and PSU!

Then try a mates PSU with your setup... if the problem goes away you know its the PSU... if it stays probably your Mobo!

Tested it today with a XFX XXX Edition 650W PSU, but wasn't able to test graphics card on another motherboard.

Is there any chance the motherboard could be cause? As if 3D load only the extra juice should be coming via auxilary connections instead of motherboard PCI Express slot?

I've heard something like this with many cards in the past (first was an old Nvidia 6800nu).
If it's the same issue you'll notice it a lot in high framerate situations eg. on main menus for games, I found putting V-Sync on solved it in most cases for me though.
