Apple and Graphic Design

Hi guys.

Can anyone tell me why design studios and professionals practically all prefer Apple hardware?

Is it purely a case of designers desiring design, or is there something I'm missing?

I know that it was once true that Adobe software ran best on OSX and the OS was more stable on the whole than offerings from Windows, but with Win7, aren't the two a lot more similar?

Basically it comes down to this.

I'm buying a new laptop for GD work. I either buy a Sony VAIO for £450-£600 with great specs, or I buy the 13" Macbook for £800 with the benefit of 0% APR but lower spec.

Of course, everyone wants to have the flashiest model out there, but is it worth the added premium?

A friend of mine is an Animator the other is a Graphics Designer.

They were both taught their trade on Macs but don't let that fool you, you could get an interview at a company that uses windows, so I would say you need to comfortable using the keyboard shortcuts for MAC AND WINDOWS.

You need to able to use both systems and the shortcuts, I would buy a Mac and dual boot windows 7 and OSX. That way you can be taught on whatever OS the college uses and still practice and learn the shortcuts/ ways of working on the other system.

Don't think of it as an idealogy, as when you join a company I doubt you will get a choice and when you get asked to do a practical exercise for an interview you don't wanna look a retard if you can't use a Mac as the adobe shortcut keys are different for each OS.

Everyone has their own reasons but if youre looking to work at an agency then you need to be able to work on a Mac without problem :) not every agency uses macs but a high majority do!

Personally I'd say get the macbook, but you are asking in the Apple section :P

He doesn't have a choice IMO, you need to demonstrate capabilities on both OS's.

a mac with bootcamp is more stable than a PC with a hackintosh partition. You don't wanna lose your data mid project!

Well yes, but this isn't a MAc Vs PC Q really.

In this case Mac Vs PC is irrelevant as he will need to be proficient at using both.

So he needs to buy a mac and install windows on a partition.

I already know most of the shortcuts from using OSX at college, so that isn't a problem. This is pretty much completely for personal use. Cost is always going to be important, but if a Macbook will be much better for it, I'm willing to pay the extra.

So, two bonus questions.

Is 10 months the longest finance option available?
Is a 13" Macbook really going to be enough for this kind of work? The screen sounds like it may be a bit too small?

I've also asked in the Laptop section what importance integrated GFX will have when using Adobe products as the VAIO is Integrated Intel HD Graphics, but alas, no replies.

I wouldn't wanna do graphics design on a 13". Desktop iMac surely?

As for finance I don't know, don't forget the Higher Education Discount!

If your being taught on a Mac then you could get that Windows laptop you want. As long as you can use both systems by the time you go for jobs...

I'm sorted as far as desktop goes. Just looking a laptop.

17% for the HE Discount, right? So just over £700 for the Macbook.

If I could get it payable over 20 months rather than 10, £35/month would be perfect.

Actually... may just enquire about a loan at my Credit Union. Didn't think of that.

I never mentioned mac vs pc. Buying a mac means he can use osx and windows which was my point of buying a mac :)

Can you get finance on HE discount?

I've been in the business two years, doing it all on a pc. My boss uses a mac. Only problem we have is file permissions sometimes. But realistically i would say buy a cheaper, more powerful Windows machine. There's no architectural reason to go for a mac, and the only reason agencies use them is because they look nice and are the established standard. You'll be fine whichever platform you choose, but just make sure you choose for the right reasons.

This is the VAIO I'm considering.

Surely you can find a better specced laptop than that 15.5" Sony? After all depending on the price, you can get decent laptops for sub £600 with dedicated graphics, and sub 600 with i3 cpus, keep browsing.

I recently bought a dual core netbook, £20 more than the single core version (irrelevant i know) but it shows if you keep looking, the deals can be had :)

January sales around the corner, but with 20% VAT rise, maybe try and get your order before Jan?

Goodluck :)
