Hi all,

Woke up this morning to the sound of rushing water to find an outside pipe had burst. the pipe only fed a cold tap outside and had previously gone above a turn off joint, which I just turned off as it is never used in the winter.

However this time the pipe has actually split, about 1cm long facing the wall, and below the stop for it which means I've had to use the main one in the house to turn it off. We now have no cold water to the entire house or the boiler.

Are there any quick fixes I can do to bodge it until I can look at replacing it later in the week?

Also, anyone any links to sites that cover the basics of plumbing? so I can have a go at replacing it myself. I am then going to build a wood cover the entire pipe and fill it full of newspaper to try and insulate it better!

Depending on how much room there is and whether it is to be temp until things warm up, I'd suggest something simple like this ....

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/13133...Speedfit-15ESOTP-Emergency-Shut-Off-Taps-15mm

It's a push fit so all you need to do is cut the pipe, take off the burrs so it is amooth and then push on the fitting until it hits the stop point (1/2" or so) .... check for leaks but should be ok.

No soldering, no spanners needed, just a junior hack saw or pipe cutter and a file.

Rubber and jubilee clip is what is do. Slice a bit of hosepipe and use that.

Above suggestion is easy too. But ya need a file with a hacksaw cut not with a pipe cutter one :)

Thats exactly what I'd do......B&Q are open today they'd have them I expect.

I'd go for singists advice. I've had 3 bursts in 2 pipes so far this winter and have been introduced to some basic plumbing fittings. Really is easy and cheap to fix and they're a great job.

As already said, a bit of rubber and a jubiless clip

When I burts a pipe I went to Halfords and asked for a scrap innertube, I also filled the around the hole with a bit of plumbers putty and let it set before putting on the rubber.

Alternatively cutting the pipe and sticking a push or compression connector between will work too

Well, 2 Jubilee clips, a bit of plumbers tape and some hose pipe stopped it dead!

I'll be removing the pipe altogether, moving the outside tap straight on to it where it comes out from the wall, making a proper wood insulating cover for it and then adding a stop inside.

Also, thanks for the links all, I will be checking them out. This is the 3rd plumbing issue we've had in the last month, I will be taking a course next year on it :D
