Anyone own one of these and is around 22-23?

I would like one but have heard the insurance is the limiting factor?

Anyone else have any thoughts about these? I have been eyeing up Mk1 TT 225s and now these have popped up on my radar as a more manly alternative.

Any help or thoughts appreciated about the two.

I owned one briefly :p when I was 22, insurance was quite expensive around £1400 for 12 months IIRC.
Fantastic engine and the best gearbox in any car I've driven by miles.
Sorry I can't add more, my ownership was very brief :p

Neil.

I have one and have had since I was 23. At the time I had 1 years no claims, and it cost me about £1700 for a 10 month bonus accelerator with Elephant. Back then the car was worth about £20k, and I lived in a central SW1 post-code in London (deemed high risk), depsite being parked indoors in a private residents car park.

Not too sure what you want to hear. Mine has been thoroughly reliable, though very carefully maintained by myself. I have a hardtop which makes it a very cosy coupe in the winter time. Is it easy to drive? Depends what you are comparing it against, but its by no means an easy car to step into and drive. Its a car you have to work, but thats part of the reason it feels "special" and has character. As a comparison I bought my gf an R32 Golf, which is probably as quick if not quicker. It certainly feels quicker and pulls like a train... but its just boring in comparison to the S2000. I feel a bit like a naughty school boy squeezing the thottle until the revs hit the 9k mark and making the engine scream. Granted that style and power delivery wont be for everybody though.

As said above, the gear change is as slick as you will find on a car in that price range, reliability should be great if its been well looked after. I feel anyone owning a "specialist" car should assume running and maintenance costs of the car at the price it was new, not the £8-12k range that you are probably looking at now. Treat them as they deserve to be and you'll have great fun.

Insurance could well be a limiting factor, and I guess thats due to the number of them being written off and the availability of spares. If you want a car to get from A to B quickly and show off to your mates, then you should look elsewhere. If you want a car thats rewarding to drive but takes some work, then get yourself some quotes, and get yourself a test drive.

Why don't you do some insurance quotes and see for yourself?

Because I didn't ask for just insurance details, I wanted to here some useful posts like the ones below yours about the car :)

Thanks for the above, I liked the idea of having a hard top for winter and then drop top for summer. I think I like the idea of vtec, not sure so when the weather clears up I am planning to take one on a test drive.

In terms of well known issues, are there any?

e.g. on the TT the HT leads are made of chocolate and the ARB cracks/bushing perish.

I've done some quotes and have 4.5 years ncb at the moment and its not looking too bad, the TT is cheaper to insure.

What sort of mods are the usual route? I know for the TT 225, everyone maps it and pushes it to about 260. In my brief reading there isn't any easy option for the s2000 and mostly its about handling?

Really quick post,

I owned one from Nov 2007 to Oct 2010, or rather from 23 to 26

I did loads of posts about the car including a first year summaryvof ownership.

read that, work out if you can afford to run one properly and go from there. do not look at 6k samples and think its a cheap car. suspension issues cost a fortune.

Happy to chat further, but I would suggest spending more on an s2ki long term owned enthusiasts car

Why do you want one? The reason I ask is that someone who wants an Audi TT doesn't usually want an S2000, they are quite different cars.

if you want power gains from a vtec unit it will cost a fair bit im talking like 2-3k for the super charger or turbo converison which if anything could make the car less fun to drive

I currently own a Mk1 TT 225

Good points

Looks fantastic and gets a lot of positive comments. Doesn't look like a 7 year old car

Well kitted out interior for a 7 year old sports car and fairly comfortable (leather, climate control, electic windows, 6 disc changer, very often cruise control etc).

Good performance - Very easy to drive quickly day-to-day and even more so with a £350 remap so I am told, taking it from 225 to 260bhp

So far cheap to maintain (£200-£250 service every 2 years through Audi, MOT free each year through Audi, cambelt £375 at Audi)

Decent economy - 30mpg average, down to 25 is regularly pushing it hard

Very decent boot for a sports car, especially if you treat it as a 2 seater and drop the rears. I have had two large suitcases in the boot before and it wasn't full

Bad points
Expensive compared to far newer cars. Good condition 03 plates are still £9-£10k, cheaper ones are often in very poor condition.

Electronics can be niggly (central locking, window closers etc). All can be fixed easily but a faff.

The TT doesn't give as much feedback to the driver as some cars. It can often feel a bit like playing GT4, just point and shoot.

If you are ever in Nottingham and want a better look then let me know? I may also consider letting it go for the right price as I am thinking of changing in the next 6-12 months anyway (gf wants an mx5)

Something a bit faster/more power.
Don't need 4 seats as such, but I know that one is pretty numb and has turbo and the other is involved and vtec.

Thanks, just read the year summary, am heading over to the forums to read the FAQ and have a good read.

Thanks for the offer, I have done extensive reading about the TT as it was my first choice for easy bhp at a reasonable price.

I considered an mx-5 as well, but don't know if I can overcome the hairdresser image if I'm honest. PH raves about them as being awesome, but at the end of the day I would have to live with it. Have you upgraded the ARB at the front to reduce understeer?

I can literally insure a Mercialago LP670 for less than an S2000.

It's bonkers.

"Some people think I'm bonkers but I just think I'm free."

Fox are you serious about the Lambo quote being less than a Honda?

My colleagues S2000 was more expensive than his Griffith 500 to insure. He didn't even like the S2000 very much, preferred his CTR even though he thought the S2000 was (and is) the better car.

Reason being that people buy them after owning a hot hatch and cant understand why they spin off the soaking roundabout with cold tyres.

Geometry is hugely important on these.

Was wondering about this, so I just ran a quote.

AP2 S2000, 04 plate - £1800!

For comparison:

Focus RS £1200
Focus ST £900
370Z £1500
350Z £900

Crazy insurance on that car.

S2000 just seems around similar money to other cars that are expensive to insure. It is within £100 of an Impreza RA and Evo 6 and E36 M3 for me (All around the £1100-1200 mark).

Nods, I don't think it inspired him with the confidence the CTR gave him through the bends. I always liked it though, will never forget the sound it made with the airbox lid off and he hit VTEC in a car park when I was in an adjacent building. It sounded like the world was about to end and than he reached 6000rpm! :D
