Howdy all,

Got a quick question I hope you guys can help with!

I'm about to purchase the Onkyo HTX-22HDX & Onkyo SKS-22X receiver/speaker package system but need to know if I lose anything going from optical from my tv opposed to hdmi from my devices.

The onkyo has 3 hdmi inputs, I have 4 hdmi devices. So I planned on keeping all devices running to the tv hdmi ports as usual and then running an optical cable from the tv audio out to the onkyo optical in port.

Would I lose any quality this way? Or would that not be the ideal method?

Any help appreciated!

Here's three reasons not to go via the TV...

1) If you have a Blu-ray player then I think HDMI is the only connection method to get the HD audio soundtracks in to the HTX-22HDX.

2) Some TVs don't pass Dolby Digital and DTS audio from a HDMI input to the Optical output. Going via the TV means losing the bitstream data which then means losing things like speaker distance settings & night mode. Check your TV manual.

3) If you have Sky HD then the only way to get Dolby Digital 5.1 is via Optical from their box. Sky doesn't do DD over HDMI. It's stereo only.

What about the xbox 360, does that carry Dolby 5.1 over HDMI? Or should I use optical on that as well?

TV's only normally output stereo or 2.1 through there optical output..

(That been the case with all the TV's i have owned that have had an optical output..
But some brands may output 5.1)
