I completely agree with this. There should be no indoctrination of children at all, and IMO faith schools should be banned.

This picture just seems wrong:

She has no idea what she's doing; she's just being made to do it.

Some good comments such as:

I hope all atheists go to hell :)

I used to stand silent in my primary school assemblies, even then I realised I wanted no part in this. Absolutely in favour of these getting abolished.

Was it a church of England school? Mine was and sounds similar.

They haven't been allowed to play Christmas carols in primary schools for ages, only non-religious ones. Doesn't stop the teachers playing them mind :p

Wouldn't have any problem with my children attending Christian assemblies, I like most Christian moral values and they can make up their own minds. Kids aren't stupid.

It's being brought up in a C of E school and a Mormon home environment (yes, my poor mother was confused at the time) that made me an atheist.

No it wasnt a church of engand school, though it has a tight affiliation with the local church.

I also agree with this, when I was in primary school Christinaity was taught as fact in the daily assemblies which started to irk me as there wasn't possible to prove God. I also remember thinking how stupid "he's got the whole world in his hands" was.

I can;t see it happening, it is not politicians saying this it is atheist groups.
secondly doing this is not brainwashing, it didn't work for millions of us. It is part of teaching, although many other methods are available. I don't want to see such a law, it makes no sense.
You can't do religiuse stuff but it's ok to teach other theorys and almost criminalise religion. No thanks, there is no need for the law and should be up to schools and to some degree parents.

Bring it on.

I remember a lot of my play breaks at school I spent them trying to remember the words to the our father and hail mary knowing that if I didn't get the wordws right I would get told off in front of the class.

I'm a teacher in a primary school, we sing Christian songs and have a prayer at the end of assembly. The children don't have to pray though. They get told they need to listen quietly to what the person is saying, but they aren't required to put their hands together, or say Amen, if they don't want to.

Their parents have the right to withdraw them from assembly if they want to. Given that we have almost 500 children at school, and around 200 of them are Muslim children, and probably at least half of the rest atheists - I think we have 4 children that are withdrawn.

All schools are required to give parents the choice over whether their children attend religious assemblies, so I think schools do enough.

I also am also in education, and I personally agree they should remove the christian aspect from assemblies as children don't know what they are doing and shouldn't be forced to even listen to something they aren't developed enough to understand.

I find it very disrespectful to force any religion on any child or anybody in that case, admittedly it's not a deal breaker, but it would play a large factor in where I send my child to school - I grew up with a buddhist father and a christian mother, and not once have they pushed me to be either - they have answered questions I have had, however not led me in any direction, now as an adult I have no faith (religious).

And I know that some parents do not withdraw their children for fears of their children being picked on for being different. My opinion only though :)

And how many parents do not remove their child through fear of the child being single out?

I really don't see the problem here. Look at it from this perspective. My wife teaches at a heavily muliti-cultured, multi-faith primary/junior school in the 'ghetto' (good school to work at despite this), and they include everything they should to keep people of various religions happy. They celebrate Diwali, Eid etc etc, and various other Hindu and Muslim festivals/traditions, so why should Christian assemblies be snuffed out when all the parents have to do is withdraw the kids? It's not rocket science.

About time! I hated having to pray every single day in school and sing these stupid songs.

If we were caught not singing we had to stand facing the wall. Nothing right with any of it.

so why should Christian assemblies be snuffed out when all the parents have to do is withdraw the kids? It's not rocket science.

Well that would mean they'd have to have assemblies for the other religions.
