I had added to another thread but thought it best to start my own...

Im currently on a Dell 2407WFP for my PC/PS3 needs and like to change it to a larger 1080p HDTV. Are there any recommendations what to look for? What are the disadvantages in using a TV over a monitor for PC work?

Im mindful of input lag and as its being used for PC work that LCD(LED LCD too) will be better idea than Plasma - especially if I limit the size to 32/37" (is 37" just too big for normal PC work?). Not sure what input/outputs I would need other than multiple HDMI connections (PC connects via DVI-HDMI cable)...

Any ideas? Not looking to spend too much - I guess around £300 would be awesome. I do have other 'wants' but not gonna mention them til I get an idea whats out there...

The Sony KDL-32EX403U is on offer at John Lewis with free 5 year warranty for £300. From the reviews it says the input lag is rated at 40ms across all picture modes (cinema, game, dynamic). Not sure if that is bad or not!

Seems like a good TV though: Internet features (iPlayer, Five VoD etc), 1080p, Freeview HD

Yeah thats one that made me post but as soon as I read Input Lag I thought Id better find out what is acceptable and whats not - hell do they ghost etc? I guess a lot of people who by it just as a TV dont care for things which I thought people here would still need to consider and know about...

Think all LCD's have motion blur of some kind. Thats whats putting me off getting it for my room. I'm too use to my Panasonic plasma downstairs!

Hmm looking at HDTVtest.co.uk it seems:
The Sony KDL32EX403 features around 40ms of input lag, when compared to a lag-free CRT monitor. This is a tolerable figure that will probably go generally unnoticed, but speaking as someone who’s on the lookout for it and who is used to very fast displays, the difference was noticeable in the first-person shooter games I demo’d on the TV. In fact, the slight delay in images hitting the screen had the interesting effects of making the game controls feel tighter and weightier, and bizarrely, it gave fast-paced “one hit and you’re dead” games an almost peaceful feeling (assuming you’re still winning, that is).
Anything under 30ms is meant to be good from what I can gather...

Think Ive narrowed it down to either Samsung LE32C530 or Sony KDL32EX403. Both are around £300-£325...

The Sony has Freeview HD but average input lag while the Samsung only has Freeview but has very low input lag.

Arrgggh! :p

Ive just bought this LG 32LD450 32" Full HD LCD TV, currently on offer for £279

Its got 16ms input lag, needs a bit of tweaking to get the best picture acording to a review ive just read but is good for the money.

Comes with freeview, only 2 HDMI inputs which could be an issue (not for me though) and USB etc.

Ill be using this as a bedroom TV which will be connected to the PC.

Been looking at both and I'm in the same situation!

The Sony has a better feature set: Freeview HD (even though Ulster won't get it until 2012) and Internet features. But it has 40ms input lag, which I still can't determine if thats bad or not. The review on HDTVTest says it affects fast paced FPS's, which I mainly play (COD etc).

The Samsung has less features (no FV HD, no internet stuff), but has much better input lag at just 16ms, so not noticeable at all. Although, looking around it seems it could be a panel lottery with it!!

PQ wise, both are pretty much the same, again the Samsung may or may not be a panel lottery though.

Know anything about the Samsung UE32C5100?

Im a bit worried about the Sony as I swear on avforums on the owners thread someone was complaining about ghosting. More and more I look at it the Sony seems to be the best TV apart from gaming, which for me is the most important part...

Ive got a thread on AVF but they are down at the minute...

I did look and removed it from my shortlist but not sure why now - other then having to spend time configuring the display up. It could be a contender - thanks for posting Ill look at ti again...

The two most important things that most reviews dont seem to care about is input lag and ghosting - hdtvtest does cover input lag but not ghosting and I would assume thats still a consideration when watching high contrast movie/game scenes or just the mouse pointer.

OK I think the LE32C530 seems the best bet - it reviewed better than the 32LD450 at hdtvtest and the only minor point it regards jaggies when viewing SD detail which is no biggy. Not having Freeview HD also isnt an annoyance for me (I have coverage but its only 4 basic channels :p) - I already watch my TV via PlayTV on the PS3 and use the record function a lot so I would still need a solution to record TV - might aswell invest in the PlayTV2 then :D

Im off to JL in the morning - I may come back with a TV I may not, need to see it in person and see if my slight annoyance with my present solution warrants money thrown at it...

Also can someone reconfirm to me that anything above 32" is just too big for PC desktop stuff. I seem to be upgrading myself - now to look at possible LED versions, supposedly theres decent 32" LED LCDs under £500...

EDIT: Arrgh just learnt about the requirements to have 1:1 pixel mapping - dno if any of the above do that - more research (remember why this defeated me the last time I asked)...

I'm in exactly the same boat as you are. Looking for a 32" for my PS3 gaming.

From what I have researched, it's between the LG 32LD450 and the Samsung LE32C530, which is exactly what you have just said haha. So looks like we are on the right track then.

You only need to worry about 1:1 pixel mapping if your looking at a 16:10 screen, which neither of these are.

There is really not much at all to distinguish between the two so I've just been looking at the best prices really. The LG is on sale at PC World for £180, which is the best price I can find anywhere for it, so would be very convenient to get and would be from one of the most trusted companies there is.
The only price that matched this with the Samsung was from a random website that I have never heard of before and seemed like a pretty small business.

So for me it's probably the LG that wins between the two so I'll probably go out and get that one.

And about looking for larger than 32", the next step up would be 37" which would be HUGE to have as a PC monitor, especially if you're sitting right in front of it. Would be way too big for me.

Let me know how you get on.

Its my understanding I need 1:1 pixel mapping for PC desktop work to ensure the picture Im seeing is accurate - the TV shouldnt overscan (some still seem to with HD signals) but its the best way to ensure the resultant image is crisp...

I did go to JL yesterday but it was packed so didnt get to look at much - they did have the Sony and Samsung and all I can say is that the Samsung did look nicer...

EDIT: I presume you mean £280 and not £180? Just looked at their website...
