New Years Eve in London?

Myself and a couple of friends are wanting to go to London (central) for new years eve to soak up the atmosphere. We plan to arrive for about 9pm ish I reckon, and then head home about 2/3am I guess.

We're coming from Salisbury, I was going to drive most of the way and then park up somewhere. Then make our way in, by another method of transport. Any suggestions? Basically I'd like to park the car up somewhere safe, relatively close and then be able to get home again without any hassle.

We're not worried about drinking or going to a pub/club just want to be there for the atmosphere.

I need suggestions of where to park, what area to head to and how to get there. :)

Thanks in advance!

Advice stay in the warm with the other half , way to cold brrr :D

Tubes will be running until at least 4:30am, so find a station that's very far out, park and take that in. It will be free on your return journey.

If you are going for just atmosphere with nowhere to go, I'd probably go see the fireworks or something.

I had to drive across London once on NYE, not quite totally central, but from North to South across the river. Took about three and a half hours.... never again!

I'd advise you to not bother - I did this last year and you basically end up crowded around some part of the Thames waiting for some fireworks that you may or may not get a good view of. It was a complete cluster - ****. I'd advise getting tickets in advance for something* if down in London.

If you want to be outside and see fireworks/soak up atmosphere then I'd advise going to Edinburgh - did it a couple of times and Prince's Street is 10 times better than being outside in London on NYE. It was also the easiest place to pull that I've ever experienced, literally within 15 minutes after midnight I'd snogged about 12 different completely random girls - people were just going up to each other and making out.

(*night club, comedy club, formal dinner and dance thingy at some posh hotel/members club etc..etc..)

I got a taxi from St Pauls to Islington last NYE at about 2am and there was very little traffic (probably less than a normal Friday night).

edit - though crossing the river probably isn't a good idea - I don't think it would even be possible for a good few hours as there were hundreds of people on most bridges.
