Honda S2000

Agree hilly but they are hardly expensive once insurance is factored in.

N of course, but if you're on a budget, which OP sounds as though he is, as he's overly worried about running costs, then having a two seater sports car might not be the best move.

It depends on his circumstances though of course :)

I'm not overly worried about the expense, just weighing up the cost V enjoyment I would get from the car.

I do a short (15/20 min) trip to the station everyday and the car will hardly warm up enough to have any fun in that time.

I'm not one to go hooning for the sake of it, so I am just considering whether a drivers car is right for me.

You need something refined and quick then, no point going the whole hog if you dont really want a sports car.

I saw this:

Cheap S2000

This and say £1k to sort out any problems like geo/tyres/suspension problems?

Or as Mark says, something like a CLK with a v6

I Hate it, yes a shouting H, when people put miles as 105 instead of 105,000 just so it shows up in all searches, arghh!

I'd say spend the money on something that's already tip top. As mentioned above, for short commutes, the S2000 wouldn't be my choice as I'd hardly get a chance to hoon it in that short space of time before it warms up.

Maybe I'm being too much of a fanboy, but sub 5k, hell even sub 6k S2000's scare me.

Potentially, that car could be fine though. Things to look for-

-Tears in the roof
-What tyres it has on it - people may lol at me for this, but I'd want the right rubber on it
- Engine rocker cover will have peeled paint, no worries there
- drivers bolster on the seat. side one will be scuffed and lower one may have collapsed. I repaired mine with a sponge (wehay) and some liquid leather and they looked like new after. No replacement foam available like the DC2 recaros.
-As I have already said, state of the suspension. With 100k on the clock the dampers will almost certainly be tired, so it won't be 'factory fresh' regardless. Maybe get them to get an alignment done prior to purchase (giving them the figures you want on all adjustors) ... if they won't adjust, so be it and take it to CG/WIM/TGM/Dixcel/Whoever )

Just be aware that these engines can give way. 'common' cause is the engine eating a valve after an over rev 5-10-20-50k miles earlier fractured a keeper. Get the car to a Honda garage asking them to do a full service inc valve adjustment (figures for best performance can be found on s2ki) and ask them to inspect the valves and keepers. if you can get that on the invoice that they were ok then you might stand a chance with the full honda SH of some good will if the engine did go pop a mile down the road.

Just my 2 pence :)

By the sounds of things though, I'm not sure you'd 'get' an s2k, and would probably end up selling it in a few months.

I don't know what made you think that, I get what its about, just that I won't have time to enjoy it.
I'm pretty handy on the track and enjoy watching motorsport so I get how its a drivers' car.

Reason for the comment is simple.

You started a thread about a car which is ... i would say a rev happy daily driver elise, and then said you were considering an audi tt.

the two are quite honestly worlds apart.

It certainly isn't a dig at you, and id be saying the same if you said 525tds se 5 series or mk1 golf gti

I think this post might be a little strong, but agree the engines and power delivery are worlds apart. I think Conanius is vocal fanboy, while my posts here and on S2Ki are few and far between, im more of a lurker. :p

Ive never driven a TT, but I having had frequent use of the R32 my gf has and assuming the TT is not overly disimiliar to the Golf, if I had to pick the easier car to live with it would be the VAG car. Why? Well its less involved than the S, but much more refined. More effortlessly brisk, better in wet weather and easier to access the power. Plus they come with more toys, and things like heated seats, auto dimming mirror and cruise control are things I find wanting in my S.

But then I didnt buy my S as a daily driver, I bought it for weekend fun, a job it does very well, its an involved drive and fun. Some use the S as a daily drive, but in my opinion you will be making compromises.

Bottom line is its your choice, write down what you want out of a car, and what your priorities are. Do the maths, do the sums for a rainy day and work out what maintenance and expense you are likely to incur and go test drive some examples. Then decide what suits you rather the the royal forum public.

As an aside, when I was in the hunt for an S, there was a reason cheaper cars were priced as such. I saw examples with broken roll hoops, how and why god only knows. Worn hoods, dry and cracked window seals, dirty engine bays, scatched, stained leather etc. You get an impression how well a car has been looked after when you see it. Theres arent cars to run on a shoe string, so if I saw a rough looking car, Id question what corners have been cut. That said, if you find a desperate seller who has had a genuine enthusiasm for the car, then you could bag yourself a bargain. Go see a good few examples, get a few test drives and youll get to know what is normal and what isnt. Good luck.

I'm guessing you didn't read the part where I said one was an AWD turbo car with numb steering and the other a RWD drivers car?

I don't understand why people aren't allowed to consider wildly different cars.

Thanks for the advice :) I will certainty be looking at a few examples and driving both the TT and S and then considering what I want from a car before I make a decision what to do.

I'm clearly not trying.to be a **** here hence the pages of information i hqve written in this thread..... just trying to make you realise just how different these cars will be.

The tt will still be a good drive im sure, but the s2000 is a jap plastic fantastic creaking rattling drivers car which you will hate for high bills and low mpg on the trundle to the station if the roads are damp or aren't twistly nsl's ...

I loved my one so as i have said take what i say with a pinch of salt as i am a total fanboy

Yes sorry, I wasn't berating you, just saying that I do have the little amount of knowledge to appreciate the differences between the cars.

I haven't done a large amount of reading into the S but I have made clear that I appreciate it is a completely different kettle of fish to the TT.

I appreciate the replies you have given, just need to decide whether my trips warrant a drivers car or just an A-B car.

As you have said, grab some test drives and go from there. Sounds weird, but imo performance vtec cars sell thrmselves on quick blast test drives when you hoon it like a hire car from ginger rentals.... try and do boring driving !
