Hi,

I'm in the market for a new monitor, one that carries 120hz because I am sick of screen tearing (atleast one main reason) but I have zero intentions of making use of 3D.

Running two 6870s in Crossfire and need a new screen, so figured why not go for that lovely 120fps vync cap or even be able to disable vsync completely and not get asmuch tearing.

What would you suggest from these two screens?

Asus VG236HE vs Acer GD245HQ

I do miss my CRT's in some respects, mainly because of the refresh rate limitations we have now.

According to http://www.digitalversus.com/acer-gd245hq-p357_7352_38.html they seem to have the Acer ontop, but I would rather know what gamers think of this.

Thoughts?

You don't sound too hardcore if your considering using vsync! :D

Acer has various bugs, asus one has a glossy screen, alienware overpriced and the Benq is generally winning most of the plaudits of this type (23.6") really.

I don't like tearing. I hate it. lol Why I love CRT screens. Is it hardcore to love tearng now then? Like torn jeans? Looool kids.

Benq is more pricey, but for a reason?

hah :)

No i mean..vsync is satan! it should be off regardless! and 120hz + any sort of decent fps = no tearing and vsync off = no mouselag = great!

The consideration of vsync shouldn't even enter the conversation!

2d wise the benq wins but getting stock anywhere is hard atm and the price is over the top for what it is. I just bought the acer for £245, has pretty good reviews but I'm getting it for 3d

Yeah. lol Exactly.

I hate V Sync and tearing, probably more than image quality but nothing wll match the TV in the living room and games aren't that realistic.

Just want to know the best between these two screens for games, because reviews don't seem to reveal it and I got to pull the trigger very soon. lol

Another thought, even in a tearing ridden hell, I still do far better on twitch shooters with VSync turned off. At first I thought it was the placebo effect, then I thought back to why I use to cap frame rates with commands and keep vsync off when I use to be in a Counter Strike clan.

I want that luxury again tbh, only a 120hz panel can give it. It's a personal thing, like taste in ale.

Gone for the Asus.

a lot of reports on other forums about strange rows of pixels when 120hz 2D is used on the BenQ.

Happy with my choice, cannot wait to get this thing setup tomorrow.

Why is the Benq better for 2D?

Sorry for not getting back to you I went to bed :p

Just reading this forum with some of the reviews apparently the 2d is pretty good but its really dark for 3d.

Personally you cant go wrong with any of these monitors as I said I went with the acer because i found it at a great price. Both of us in a few days hopefully will be in 120 hertz heaven :D

Its definitely not just placebo. Vsync even on 120hz/FPS creates loads of negative mouse accel.

It should feel silky smooth on 120hz + 120fps + vsync off anyway :) and far more responsive than with it on.

I got this monitor recently and think it's fantastic. Maybe this was psychological, but I found putting the Trace Free mode to 100 makes any input lag vanish. I was playing around on the Quake 3 engine and I was amazed at the default setting of 60 (thinking back to my previous 60hz LCD monitor), but it still didn't feel it was as responsive as my old CRT. But at 100, everything feels instant, and I don't see any of the ghosting one of the reviews mentioned.
I'd like you know your thoughts on this setting and whether you notice any difference going from 60 to 100. In the mean time, hope you enjoy this monitor - I'm sure you will ;)

Hopefully will get it at the start of next week (my next day off) so will let you know. Cant wait to get it and finally ditch this little no name brand 19inch and get stuck into 3d

Tbh, I have it still set to 60. It's been great so far.

Just getting use to how colourful and vibrant this panel is, they've come a long way.

Do the presets on these things actually make much difference? Or are they just like having different profiles?

I like the Game one but it's soooo bright, even when you lower brightness and contrast.

wooohooo my Acer arrived today :D

Looks fantastic and the 120 hertz my god everything really is smooth its like the good ole days of crt land. Just wondering what people did with calibrating the colours? It doesnt need much but I want to get the best out of it. Where do you find this trace free mode too?

Bit late now but i would have recommended the asus also.I am possibly one of a minority who has used both for a fair amount of time and despite it`s glossy screen (which doesn`t really bother me cos of my screen position)the asus wins in ever department Imho.

Even disregarding picture quality issues of the acer compared to the asus the thing that basically killed the acer for me was this:-

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18165523

i may just have been unlucky but i have heard of at least 2 other cases where people mentioned this (one was in holland if i remember right the other was uk based).I suspect some other people may have the problem but not noticed it, so sorry if you have an acer and you start to notice it cos i brought it to your attention ;)

On the subject of tearing and v-sync i have to say i`m like you,i can`t STAND tearing. To me it`s the single worst issue in image quality,i can even take aliasing and blurry filtering compared to the abomanation that is tearing (yes you guessed it,i dont like tearing ;) ).The beauty of 120 hz to me is not only the noticeably smoother motion you get but also the amount of mouse lag is much deminshed as to be of no real concern even with vysnc AND triplebuffering on.Yes the odd game feels a little "heavy"(usually on title screens when you see a cursor) but frankly i suspect people are convincing themselves they are feeling it at this point. At the end of the day to put it simply, because of the increase to 120, at any given time mouse lag is reduced by 50% compared to a 60hz screen.Your next update is never far away so any lag there is ,is really not that bad/not noticable.

single player/offline=Max detail you can get while trying to maintain 120 fps (use vsync and triplebuffering)

online/ multiplayer=vysnc off and reduce detail to make game run as best as possible.

Are generally good rules of thumb and give you the best of both worlds. But seriously don`t take it as gospel about mouse lag/vsync on,the more responsive screens become the less this issue will rear it`s head in the future.

And just to add that what some people refer to as mouse lag can actually be mouse accelaration. This increasingly HORRENDOUS idea has become more prevalent with console conversions where i believe they do some form of mapping to the xbox controller (not sure of the tech on this). This has the appearance of the mouse feeling laggy when you do very small movements and in fact if you move the mouse slow enough it completley ignores your mouse movement!! :D .games like bioshock, farcry 2 that i have seen are 2 of the best known culprits. This is were some people mistakenly refer to it as "mouse lag" and some of the confusion comes from.

Anywho, good choice on the asus is the short version of what i meant to say ;)

Yours

Ive been giving the monitor a good go today playing BFBC2, F12010 and fallout 3 and havent seen any of the problems that was experienced by you - lucky for me :) but i am using a GTX260

My only problem but its probably due to the video card is that sometimes the monitor powers off when I jump out of a game. I think the nvidia drivers crash on me but its hard to work out whats happening. I have to restart the pc sometimes to get it back.

I do have my old 19inch lcd working as an extended desktop but when I take that out of the equation the same problem happens.

Apologies - I have only just seen this post.

I use custom settings (changed in Standard Mode). I based them on the calibrated settings used by FlatpanelsHD, which are:

Brightness: 18
Contrast: 80
Trace Free: 60
RGB: Custom
• R: 98
• G: 89
• B: 90

However, I have my brightness set at 44. I have been meaning to fine tune these settings, but haven't got around to it.
