Macbook as desktop: take battery out?

you could do, but if theres a power cut theres no backup battery. It's probably best to keep it in and just cycle it once a month (drain it fully and recharge).

Is it best to take the battery out when using the macbook on desktop mode for months on end?

No. When the CPU is at full pelt, it draws more power than the power supply can provide. Hence if you've taken your battery out in this situation, the CPU will underclock itself to compensate. There is an Apple KB article about it somewhere.

Leave the battery in, but ensure you maintain a good charging regime. Let it run down every now and then so the electrons stay mobile!

As noted above. CPU will under clock without battery. I've had mine desk topped for 4 years and the battery still has 80% of its original capacity. Just run it down once a month.

I wouldn't.

Didn't use a battery on my old PowerBook once as I was using the power supply at a desk... the battery won't take any charge at all and is useless.

Seems like this is the way to go! Will probably cycle the battery once a week to make sure I don't wreck it.

I was nearly gonna wast £530 on a Mini lol, it didn't really dawn on me I could use my Macbook as a desktop!

Yeah, I like how a solid "clamshell" mode has been a staple of the Mac laptops. They're all essentially desktops, too, as you say.

You'd need to unscrew the entire back cover from the new style unibodies to get the ostensibly non-removable battery out so I think that answers this question for the future.
