Focus ST or Impreza WRX?

What?? who said that. LOL

Open source software doesn't enable you to put fuel and sparks in magical places. Neither can you do that the other way round.

The software is only as good as the mapper using it.

thats more down to the needs of buyers.

As i've already said, off the shelf maps arent popular with the community and few can resist the temptation to go further and get more power.

There isn't an off the shelf map (that I know of) for the impreza in standard form anyway.
It's PPP or nothing (which includes a sports cat downpipe at the very least)

so a base ECUTek remap gets 250bhp ?

but an open source based map can get 270bhp + ?

are there any other costs ?

I didn't say there were power difference. They both get the results just in different ways. I was simply saying that you would be a bit silly to spend £600 on a ECUtek map on a standard car.

I'm confused if there is no power differences, what power levels do they produce

because anything from 250 to 280 bhp has been quoted so far ?

Tell you what chaps, easy way to settle this, we all chip in for remap on my stock (bar a prodrive backbox, can't make any power difference??) 2.0 WRX and get before and after graphs done.

Then we'll see what a stock car makes after a remap.

A few pounds from many members and this can all be settled :p

(well it was worth a try :p)

PPP pack for WRX does not include sports cat downpipe. The downpipe was only included on the STi PPP, all the WRX got was the intercooler Y pipe, new centre section with the silencer thingy removed (not an actual cat as people believe), backbox and a remap.

depends on ability of tuner, depends on braveness of the tuner to a large degree also. depends on boost level, condition of the engine, fuel used, type of dyno.
This is where all the discrepancies start creeping in

Very true, as sacriligious as it might sound if I got mine done I'd want a safe map that could be very safely run in 95ron without risk of going boooom.

Never seen a PPP on a wrx with a std downpipe in 5 years I've been there.
Have heard this being mentioned before though

Pointless getting it mapped at all then.

The throttle pedal works both ways as well you know. Fill with 95 if you have to but just don't nail it.

oh hang on.. I think It's time I went to bed, I've totally ballsed my reply up to you ScoobyDoo

I thought you were replying to me as it came directly under my last comment

Probably because the downpipe seems to be one of the things that people who mod their WRXs swap out straight away.

But the standard PPP pack doesn't touch it at all.

Also the centre pipe replaced in the PPP does not replace any cats, it removes the centre resonator or something. The diagram in this thread on Scoobynet shows the bit I mean, all the 'green' labeled cats remain even with PPP. Although that's for the 2 litre, the 2.5 could well be a different setup.

And my comment about 95ron might have seemed a bit dumb, what I meant was I wouldn't want something with a map that was done on V power and left very little leeway for lower grade fuels. Much like the standard car says run on 97 ron, but it's not going to blow if you don't.

Was more implying that I wouldn't want a balls out, eek as much power as possible map on the car, just a nice little increase would be good.

Probably won't ever get it done, but do get tempted to whip down to Alan Jeffries :p

any idea why ?

Is it because it can't be done or just because there isnt any demand ?

It's because of the way the Ecutek licence works I believe. The PPP piggy-backs a whole new control circuit across the ECU, and is the nearest thing to a "plug-in" off the shelf ECU remap. But that requires the downpipe cat to be removed to match what the map expects (hence the slightly higher power gain over a simple remap).

The expense for Ecutek remapping is the unlock fee: about £460 IIRC. Once you've paid that you have control over the ECU forever - or at least whoever has the key does. Further remaps will thus be a lot cheaper - typically about £250. But I suspect that the reason that there are no off the shelf solutions are that if you're going to blow the warranty, you want to do it over a lot more than just 30bhp. If you want to keep the warranty, then there PPP but it's expensive. Which means bigger mods, such a as new turbo. With a fair market in second-hand VF35s off the STIs, a better turbo can be had for about £400-500 plus fitting. That takes you up to about 330-350bhp.
