I'm on the cusp of buying one of these. Found it was a great drive, engine felt lovely and smooth and returned 33mpg on the test drive from cold. The car itself was on the VW approved scheme but the prev owner has ravaged the interior and used 4 different brands of tyres! I'm obviously not going to buy this one, but they're busy hunting for a better one for me.

Any of you lot have any opinions/experience of these cars, please?

I'm after a fun drive, petrol rather than diesel, but 30+ mpg and something I can transport the family around in. For my 10k budget, I seem to be in the territory of 57 plate cars with 40k on them. That's fine, but I need it to be trouble free for the next couple of years at least. Am I onto a winner here or not?

Cheers in advance.

Ok any other sub 10 grand cars that are family sized, under 50k miles and decent to drive I should be considering?

Golf yawn

120i
CTR

But if your one of those people that look at VW's as the pinnacle of car ownership then we are going to struggle to suggest anything

I already have a 120d as my main car. After owning a 56 plate civic for 6 months I'll never have another Honda.

And I generally don't like vw, the golf is for my wife but I will have to drive it occasionally so I was trying to steer her towards something I coul put up with

Oh and it has to have 4 doors which rules out the CTR even if I'd not had such a poor experience with Honda.

It was bought as the ex demo car. 2.2 diesel sport. It was recalled three times for suspension and hand brake, plus it was in 5 times for engine management problems. The dash, suspension and seats rattled horribly and I flogged it after 6 months as it was the worst built car I've ever owned. Dealers were useless also.

If you want a MK5 Golf and have 10k I would look for a older GTI which are also more likely to have a few options you would want to have at least Xenons. It should average somewhere between 32-34mpg and 40mpg+ is easily available on a long drive.

Servicing is also very cheap now VW have introduced fixed price servicing for cars over 3 years old. They only differentiate between cars upto 2L so a GTI costs the same to service as any other Golf other than the R32, £120 which should be every 13-15k if the car is on the long life service plan.
