Hello all, a little help needed here.

I'm looking for a laptop at the moment and i will be doing a fair chunk of video editing over the coming months.

Now, i'm wondering how much difference dedicated gfx will make when it comes to editing (mostly premier pro), possibly after effects but hopefully not!

Now, from what i've researched (please correct me if i'm wrong), cards such as the ATI HD 5470 & NVIDIA GeForce 310M are not that much better than integrated intel gfx.

So, would paying a premium for higher end cards such as the 330m, 350m, GT420M, GT425M be worth it when it comes to video editing? Or is it not worth the extra cash?

The rough spec i will be buying anyway will be

  • i5-460M
  • 4GB Memory
  • 500GB HD

Hope you can help,

Thanks,

Gil.

For Adobe bigger CPU and better GFX card.

I've just bought i7 1.7 and GT445m.

What videos are you editing? DV? HDV? AVCHD?

Hi there, thanks for the response.

My budget is around £650 (from purple store) so it won't stretch to i7 + a top gpu :(

Most of my work will be in DV, with one project planned to be HDV.

I've just bought a Dell XPS 17 for £760 for the following:

Processor
Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 740QM (1.73 Ghz, 6MB, 4C

LCD
17.3" HD+ WLED True-Life (1600x900)
Specifications - LCD

Video Card
3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 445M Graphics Card
Specifications - Video Card

Memory
4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
Specifications - Memory

Hard Drive
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive

Shop around

The problem is i have an insurance voucher for the purple store so i dont have the option of shopping around.

The other issue is i'm completely skint, and the £100 excess i had to pay is more than i can afford at the moment anyway!

£650 it is i'm afraid. :(
