WOW! :D I wonder how long he has spent growing that beard! It'll be amazing when he is 100.

He’s a Rasputin look-alike. :D

He isn't an academic.

He's got an undergrad degree in computer science form Cambridge and later had an IT job at Cambridge - he apparently used to e-mail academics around the world using his Cambridge e-mail address (some of whom assumed he was some academic at Cambridge working in the field).

Cambridge issued him with a Phd (not an honorarium) on the strength of his work in mitochondrial DNA and Aging.

That makes him a bone fide academic surely?

Speaking of wikipedia!

Social conditioning refers to the sociological process of training individuals in a society to act or respond in a manner generally approved by the society in general and peer groups within society.

The concept is stronger than that of socialisation, which refers to the process of inheriting norms, customs and ideologies. Manifestations of social conditioning are vast, but they are generally categorised as social patterns and social structures including education, entertainment, popular culture, and family life. The social structure in which an individual finds him or herself influences and can determine their social actions and responses.
