Hey all,

Happy new year to you all!!!

I've just treated myself to a 460GTX (from a 8800GT Alpha Dog), I recently started playing BFBC2 and the 8800GT seemed to lack umph so went out and got a 460GTX (most likely a big mistake lol)

Anyhow, the 460GTX is worse than my old 8800GT on the one game I want to play......i've spent most of today trying different settings/drivers/walls to bang my head off but i'm getting nowhere fast.

One thing that i'm confuzzled about is if my CPU is or isnt bottlenecking my system for the 460GTX? I've overclocked my 5000BE to 3.2Ghz but its still only a dual core at the end of the day. Is this why my GPU usage and FPS are so low in BFBC2? i'm typicaly seeing 15-40fps (low settings and forced DX9) in game and GPU usage about 30%.

I got about 2000 3D marks on the 2011 program, which is about average for my CPU/GPU combo so I think the GFX card isn't dead/dying.

Any advice? Is it worth me trying the 265.90 Quadro drivers with the mod .inf file?

Cheers all,
Chris

Try turning up the in-game settings not lowering them. This should force the 460 to do a bit more of the work ;)

Yup. I found that my X2 5000+ BE at 3.1 GHz was bottlenecking my HD4850 in a few games, mainly console ports.

Got myself the X2 5000+ 45nm and unlock it to quad when needed (needs a motherboard with ACC though and I got lucky with the unlock). Makes all the difference even at similar clock speeds.

Quad is the way to go I think.

Cheers for the replies...

You have confirmed what I didnt want to hear, I need to upgrade CPU which means I have to upgrade mobo too.

Next question is what CPU/Mobo to get? approx £200 budget?

My current rig:-

Abit AN52
X2 5000+ Black Edition
4GB Corsair 800Mhz 4x CM2X1024-6400
460GTX
Audigy SE
Hyper 580w
Samsung 2232BW
Windows 7 64

As mentioned sometimes forcing higher settings like more anti-aliasing can help to reduce the bottleneck though in your case you are playing online, so I expect the benefit to be minimal. Give it a try anyway.

I've tried, I set everything to high and it just kills my fps even more.

If I disable a CPU core via task manager my fps goes to 5-9fps, so im guessing my CPU is just doooomed!

If I was you I would look at trying to source a decent 2nd hand AM2+ motherboard as good new ones are few and far between and getting and maybe getting a Athlon II X4 640 and overclock it.

Agree with "upgrade to AM2+ board" sentiments.
Used or a cheap new board with the lowest price quad could come in at about £100.

If you're going to be upgrading CPU though, I'd look at moving away from that Hiper 580w...
I still have a 580w modular going in another PC, but I wouldn't trust it with current components, especially your shiny new GTX460. :)
Search for Hiper 580w and have a look at the numer of failure/failing/rma threads.

Go for a sempron clock it to 4ghz and its just over 50!! :)

I thought semprons were pretty poor? What difference would I see from a sempron to a non-sempron?

I didn't realise there were problems with the Hiper PSU's. I've had mine a couple years now and it seems ok.......I take it the PSU can blow components once they start failing?

if your hiper 580w is still going strong after all this time it will be fine.

I hope so (fingers crossed). I have a Tagan PSU lying about too, but I think thats only 480w.

I just want to make my PC more future proof, and be able to play BFBC2 without no rubbish fps during gun-fights.

DDR2 will not work in a DDR3 motherboard. DDR3 is extremely cheap right now. I would not run such a rig on the Hiper power supply, they are extremely poor, there are some very good PSUs which people on this forum will be able to advise you on. The PSU can and most likely will damage parts if you allow it.

Happy New Year. ;)

I think sempron is fastest single core out there, i only suggested if you are on a really sight budget... Get a board with the 750 southbridge though, as most semprons unlock to athlon x2...
