As title, will be moving away from work to be closer to family, we currently have a 2007 1.6 seat leon , looking to get rid of that for something cheaper to run as we have a baby on the way, any suggestions ?

make sure you drive one of those bluemotion things, a guy work got a golf bluemotion and it drives him mad, he can't wait to get rid of it, utterly gutless and just crying out for a 6th gear, it's horrible to sit in at 70, 5th just isn't high enough.

I found the Polo BlueMotion dire, couldn't better 60mpg out of it even using it relatively gently - still impressive mind but some distance off the quoted figure. Bizarrely the Renault Clio 1.5dCi was a much nicer car to drive - and a whole 2mpg better in quick and dirty testing. Cheaper and more powerful to boot.

Obviously the Polo felt quite nicely built in some respects but that was about all it had going for it....

Buying something that is not going to cost you much to run, isn't going to depreciated much and is cheap to insure will save you a lot more money then looking at pure economy.

sorry, used and budget is part ex with current car and maybe a grand cash.

You know it would be cheap to spend less on a car?
Spending your part ex plus cash kinda makes the saving on fuel pointless :p

If you really want to be saving money, punt off the current car, buy something worth £1000 or £2000 less and then bank the £2000 or £3000 you have.

Much better than spending £1000 + a car to make saving of £50-£100 a year on fuel.

saving on road tax, insurance and hugely cutting the fuel bill on a car we would keep for a few years would outway the 1k i woulda thought.

whats the mpg of a leon ? 40mpg ? , the polo claims 70 odd but , say i can get a 60mpg car, the mrs spends £200 a month on petrol.

But so would banking a few grand.
Insurance isn't going to be that much different surely, neither is road tax.

Also you are going from a normal size hatch to a smaller hatch. You said you have a baby on the way, you want all the space you can get tbh.

I used to own a Golf GT Sport. Basically a 2.0 TDi with 6 gears.

Looks the business and I could get over 70mpg in it down the motorway. That is, of course, driving VERY carefully. Fair bit of grunt when needed as well.

Easily gets over 50 on average.

Will this be your only car? As baby stuff takes up a lot of space, so with a polo after a pram is in the boot, not much else will get in there.

Hey,

Polo gets my vote - clio ownership 10 months -(dci 100)

2x driveshaft
2x rear calipers
2x front springs

Thats just a starting point, the list goes on! Avoid like the plague imo. As soon as I get some money behind me back to german I go.
