I have been offered a job with a 80 mile commute Aldershot to Portsmouth, so will cover a good 20k a year including my own mileage, duel carriage way motorway most of the way. Can be new, nearly new, must be mega reliable and nice place to be, long service intervals will be handy as well.

I like the look of the Volvo C30 states it can do over 800 miles on a tank of fuel, not to small, the looks are questionable but quirky and so is the price.

So what does OCUK recommend.

Private purchase,company car?

Audi A3 TDi, 120d, without knowing budget or other requirements its hard to offer much more.

I'm not sure a C30 1.6d would be an especially nice place to be. A D5 version would be pretty quick for a deisel, not all that much less economical and and a much nicer engine.

If it has to be diesel.

Dont put 20k a year on a new car unless you are super rich. Huge waste of money, you'll suffer loads of depreciation.

Doesn't matter if he's not buying it.........

Otherwise he speaketh the truth :)

No it will be a private purchase , got 8k in the bank and will finance the rest with either a loan or finance, will go with the best option. I will get whatever the government allowance is on fuel, so I want to at least cover my costs there with decent mpg.

It doesn't have to be quick its for sitting on the motorway getting decent mpg.

It will be a 3 year job commute so ill be sticking a decent amount on it. I just want something half decent to be sat in 2 hours a day, thats not going to cost me a fortune in fuel, and not cost the earth in servicing and running costs.

Would move closer but wife is in a good job so cant.

Also will set of at 7am so roads shouldn't be to bad, i can see the drive home being busy though.

Octavia 170pd vrs tdi.
I did 25k a year in mine and it had a ling life 20k interval, great engine, massive boot and a very comfortable place to be on any roads. You won't get 800 to a tank but really is a fantastic car.

Moving closer or a different job.

Commuting that distance will get on your breasts, not to mention making your day several hours longer than it could be.

Sadly for a lot of people it's not as easy as 'just move closer' or get a different job :)

Thank you for clearing that up for us Columbo.

Oh I'm sorry, let me give you another pearl of wisdom then, 'That commute sounds totally gay', better?

Why was my comment any less helpful than yours, another member said just move closer as a lot of people on here seem to think it's the easiest thing in the world to find a job close to home, or to just up sticks and move for one.

This was shown in the large commuting thread a while ago.

A lot of folk on here appear seriously naive and exhibit less than a spoonful of life experience. On a similar note there was a recent thread about motor insurance and geographical location being a factor in costs. A few Einsteins seriously suggested that the best course of action to cut car insurance premiums was to move house to a less risky, less expensive postcode.

Genuis, innit?. :p
