New Mountain Bike Needed

I'm looking at getting a new mountain bike and in need of a bit of advice.

I've been looking on ebay at second hand bikes but don't really know what models I should be looking for, are there any particular models I should be looking out for??

I'm wanting a front suspension bike to use on the road, canal paths and some dirt tracks

Ideally i'd like to spend a max of £200 to buy second hand.

I've seen halfords have some good offers on there Carrera range, ideally I'd like one of the following but there a bit out of my budget at the minute.

Is it worth me saving a bit longer and going for one of the following? if there still on sale or trying to source something as good second hand for cheaper.

Despite being a halfords brand the carrera range seem to get good reviews in a similar way to the Boardmans i.e overspecced for the price.

Not many reviews out there for the Vengeance ultimate but the discussion on bike radar suggests its not worth the 669rrp but at 400 ( offer price from july-october ) it was a decent bike and even better now at 320
Going to pick one up myself for general fitness. Cant be bothered with the hassle of second hand bikes and theres nothing brand new thats better for the price of the ultimate, in my opinion.

I think the sale ends around the 5th january so you may be out of luck this time but no doubt discounted again soon.
 
Not at all, just giving an option.... I don't know enough about bikes to give a proper opinion.

Is it worth the extra £70 going for the ultimate version with the diff forks to save me needing any new ones in a years time?
