hey guys in 10 days i'll be building a new pc and i am so lost on what to do go for :S
should i go for GTX570 and a 3D monitor(with nvidia 3d vision) or get 6950 and unlock to be 6970.

But i want to know is nvidia 3d vision really worth it? because well my fps will drop by half, i'll have to spend more on monitor when i think i could a super nice +24" LED monitor for same price.

what would you advise me guys???

thanks you so much =]

Even if the 3D doesn't impress you, you still get a 120hz monitor, which I have (Samsung Syncmaster 2233 which is an early one) and I must say it's amazing for gaming and totally got rid of the weird feeling LCD frantic gaming at 60hz on my Samsung 226BW used to give me.

I'd say a 120hz monitor alone is worth it.

hmmm i was thinking about it too, because you might have an amazing pc getting 160fps but if your monitor refresh rate is only 60hz you won't see much of a difference.

Did anything come of the rumoured 3D system from ATi? I've not been keeping up to date, but I thought it was supposed to be out by the end of 2010?

On balance I'd say the probability is you'd use the 3D Vision kit for a couple of weeks and then never touch it again - not that theres anything wrong with it - its just most people seem to find it too inconvenient once the novelty has worn off.

If you spend much time playing fps games online I'd say definitely get a 120Hz TFT tho - right now nothing else is comparable - but if you spend most of your time playing MMOs and stuff like that then a good quality IPS panel would be better.

Personally I'd still reccomend the GTX570 tho whichever choice you make.

what's the advantage of 570 vs unlocked 6950?

120hz screen for fps games makes me feel like i have an unfair advantage considering the majority still game at 60hz, doesnt make me turn down to 60hz though :D. I used to play unreal tournament instagib deathmatch (still do on occasion, pity its dead now), as soon as i played on my 120hz monitor i scored my highest ever frag total on an lcd screen. It really does make you aim better. If people accuse me of using an aimbot i tell them its because of the 120hz.
I seem to post in all the 3d vision threads for over a year now. The novelty still hasnt worn off, neither has it with four of my friends who bought it straight after demoing it in mine around 6 months ago. I do read of people saying it got old fast for them, i guess some things just arent for some people. But from my personal experience most people i know who have the kit, will only play a 3d vision ready game in 3d.
3d vison ready games display no 3d glitches.
For me my gaming is about 50/50 2d/3d. This is for of a couple of reasons. First of all is that i take my mp fps games seriously. I am now used to playing these games at 120fps without vsynch. However in 3d mode the 120fps is cut in half to 60 with vsynch on. This then reduces my aiming skill, which in turns makes me fustrated. Fustrated because i love the gfx and emmersion the 3d is giving me, but i got to turn it off as it is effecting my aim.
The other reason is 3d glitches. For example some fps games have a locked aiming reticule. It is always at screen depth and cant be removed. This is very distracting. For me this means im not going to play the game in 3d :( Other glitches include shadows/fog/reflections etc also being rendered at screen depth.
In a lot of these games, this can be remedied by turning off the corresponding gfx option. An example would be GTA4. The shadows are rendered at screen depth. By turning off shadows the distracting glitch is gone. Even though most of the shadows are missing, it looks FAR FAR better than 2d with shadows.
I guess its a little bit like when 3dfx cards first came out, except better. You could play a few titles at launch, all the rest had to be in 2d. Then slowly some back catalogue games got patched, along with future games released with support. With 3d vision, you have lots of games that work to a standard thats overall better than the 2d offering and a growing catalogue of glitch free 3d vision ready games.
Is it worth it? For me most definitely yes, best computer related product i have bought in over ten years the firs being my Orchid Righteous 3d. However i can see scenarios were it wouldnt be. An example being if i only played mp fps games like some people, then it would mean i would never use the 3d, until a 3d only game came out meaning we were all at the same playing field.

Phil.

Edit* Thinking about my last point, i guess fps only players atleast gain higher frag counts because of the 120hz screen.

I ended up buying nvidia 3D, for the first 2/3 weeks it was really good and forcing movies in 3D was awesome. However it only ever gets used a few times aweek now and usualy when i buy new games and test them out. I went for the Acer 3D monitor. 120Hz definatly makes 2D gaming so much more smother, when you first turn the monitor on and use your mouse for the first time it puts a smile on your face. As for 3d i get around 40-60FPS per eye which after playing in 2D you really feel like you need more FPS. If you really want 3D id recommend if possible go to a PC store and ask them for a demo, if not possible you should try IZ3Ds free version yes i know that red and blue analygraph stuff looks pretty bad but it gives you a first look at 3D without the cost.

I hear that playing mount and blade warband in 3d is absolutely epic being in the thick of the fight with arrows flying out the screen at you etc.

As for this 120hz buisness. I doubt it really makes any noticeable difference. Just like people used to claim that you have to get a 2ms response time monitor to be competitive in fps. What a load of tosh, if you can tell the difference between 2ms and 5ms then you are super human.

:EDIT:

As for ISP monitors, they are superior in colour. I recommend the benq ranges. I have a benq 24", about 3 years old now but I love it to bits still.

Its not... when I'm playing on 120Hz my KDR in games is consistantly double what it is when playing on 60Hz. Also theres far more to it than that tho, compared to most 60Hz theres far less residual image/ghosting type issues and if you like vsync (which I don't use personally) 120Hz w/ Vsync is possible without the horrid input lag of 60Hz w/ Vsync.

I love 3D vision, although as Rroff pointed out, it may be my honeymoon period with it. My SLI setup still tears through most of the games out there in 3D (bar the usual suspects) and has given me a reason to play lots of stuff again. I've also got a 23" NEC IPS and the colours are definitely a step back with the TN film panel, even after I'd used a Gretag on it. What you do get in 2D though is a lot less blurriness during movement and very little tearing with vsync off.

Which panel do you use for 120Hz?

On my 2233rz:

Red: 48
Green: 35
Blue: 41

Contrast: 75

Brightness: Your choice - 24-40 works well.

Works pretty well with much better colors than the stock profile.

I shall looks into it then. I may get 3d when the next gen of monitors and cards come out.

not sure about anyone else but i can really notice the difference between 120hz and 60hz. Its such a lovely difference and I wished I had a 120hz monitor.

Which panel do you use for 120Hz?.

I'm using the Asus VG236, I can't remember the settings off hand (I'm on the Macbook atm) but the uncalibrated settings were way off, 6800k, ludicrous brightness values and one of the RGB values had to be brought right down, the panel automatically goes into 3D mode when 3D vision is activated raising the brightness back to 100% from 20%.

My son loves mount and blade, for the monitor i'm looking for my son, he doesn't play FPS at all.

So i'm curious as what will be suggested.
