Hello everyone, Happy New Year!

Coincidentally it's also my birthday so I'm treating myself to a new machine before the vat increase.

My pc building experience is limited so I've been tempted to go for the "Ultima Viper" ocuk system but figured I could reuse my case (antec 900), psu, sound card and hard drives from my old machine and save money on building costs.

Here is what I've got so far:

Will these parts work well together?

There's some room left in the budget for a better graphics card but I don't really know what's what. Not really sure how much to spend.

The 12gb memory seems like overkill, would it be better to get 6gb and buy more in the future if needed?

(also is there a way to check previous orders on overclockers? I bought a midrange system about 2 years back, can't remember the full spec)

Happy new year :)

Save nearly £100 and get 6GB of Corsair XMS3 that is on Today's only?

Wait till Jan 9 and see how the Sandy Bridge chips perform.

I have heard the difference between the H50 and H70 is marginal also.

The Graphics card you picked is pretty low-end and you could do much better.

GTX 460
ATI 5850
ATI 6950

Edit:

Just a rough selection as i'm no expert.

4GB as anymore is overkill imo and sandy bridge is dual channel.

+ Sandy Bridge i5 2500k ( You probably wont need an i7 for gaming )
+ Sandy Bridge motherboard

Your stuff :

+ Antec 900
+ PSU ( I hope you have a good quality one )
+ Sound Card/HD etc

For graphics I would go for one of these or a 460 if your budget doesn't stretch that far.
The H70 isn't really worth it, just get a thermaltake Frio instead :D
What resolution do you play at and on which games?

Agreed, got the frio and some arctic silver 5 two days ago.

It decreased my load temps by over 30'c from the stock AMD cooler!

Can't imaging watercooling would be much better than that

Thanks for all the suggestions so far wasn't expecting so many responses so quickly, this is a busy forum!

I've revised the build and it stands as:

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £219.98

I run games at 1680x1050 although I'm investing in a better monitor soon.
Fallout New Vegas and Black Ops run slow on my old machine.

Ideally I want a decent gaming machine that will run them well on high settings/resolution. Also there's the 5th elder scrolls game out in 10 months so I'm hoping this build will be at least future-proofed until then.

I'm not particularly computer savvy and am overwhelmed at the amount of 460 cards available.

EDIT: I've just been reading up on sandy bridge maybe I should wait until then, the vat hike wont kill me.

Don't spend £200 on that 460 it is not worth it! Buy the £220 6950.

Wait for Sandy Bridge and get the new i5 which will save you money which you can put towards Graphics/Monitor/whatever you like.

If you decide to go for a current i7 stick with triple channel 6GB RAM however if not I suggest only getting 4GB as you wont need more for games.

What are you using your SSD for? If it is just for OS get the 50GB version which is much cheaper.

The power supply you selected is a good choice.

The CPU cooler could be better however it is an improvement over stock.

Wait for Sandybridge.

What is your current PSU and soundcard?

Without taking this machine apart I don't know the psu, is there a way to see previous ocuk orders?
On closer inspection there seems to be no sound card.

Thanks for the advice on gfx card.

I'm using the ssd for OS and favourite games, as ssds are still so expensive I might go for a smaller version and put the money somewhere else.

Watercooling has become a lot more popular since I last got a pc so I thought it'd be the sensible way to go (bear in mind I'm not very clued up). Maybe I'm attracted to it because it's a bit different.

EDIT: Thanks again for all the advice so far. I'm going to call it a day and sleep on it.
