I'll be using them for mainly music, but don't know what's the best to go for?

Ideally I don't want to spend any more than £150. Should I wait a little longer and spend a bit more or?

Cheers :D

Yes, get a stereo amp and some bookshelf speakers. £150 will buy you something pretty decent, that will smeg all over the majority of PC speakers. That somewhat depends on if you have space for an amp. That would get you the best sound quality for your money, but some people are more interested in how much bass there is. You would need some pretty sizeable speakers to give decent bass, and even then, that may not be enough if you are a bass lover.

If you are low on desk space, or want lots of bass, then the best bet is 2.1 speakers probably. You will sacrifice sound quality, in comparison to an amp and speakers, but that cannot be helped, without going way over budget. You will get plenty of bass though, if that's your thing. AE Aego M's, are probably the best 2.1 PC speakers.

If you can stretch to £225 for the speakers - have a look at the Monitor Audio BX-2s (although you would need an amp as well).

Best sounding speakers in the shop to my ears and then Whathifi.com went and gave them product of the year 2010 several weeks later...I was mighty chuffed! They really are awesome for the money.

2.0 is usually better than 2.1 for music

Yes, I'd certainly agree with that. Some people though can't look beyond the lack of booming bass. Some guy wanted to upgrade from 2.1 PC speakers, and he was advised to get a stereo amp and speakers, which he did, good ones, and he said the sound was crap, and not as good as the cheap 2.1 speakers. Because of the lack of bass? I worry for people who cannot tell when sound quality is better. Fair enough if it's slight, but when it's far and away better, if they can't hear the clear difference, they might as well be stuck with cheap old PC speakers.

Tom, those BX2's, do they need to be away from a wall?

Sorry Marsman yes they do (in fact I would argue that any loudspeaker should be placed at least a foot if possible away from walls due to standing waves).

2.1 speakers such as the Aego Ms are fantastic and music sound excellent though them. As for a 2.0 system the T40 is reasonable but in honesty not worth it when a little extra cash can buy better.

Go with the AE setup. They know their game and are still the same old company as they have always been.
The reason why you have to move the speakers away from the wall is due to poor internal damping. The inside of a speaker unit should be dead but to save costs manufacturers will use thin wooden panels and basic sound proofing within the cabinets.
The filter unit/crossover will also affect the sound but as many keep to a basic design this is not a concern.
To achieve the right freq response you need to calculate the air volume for the driver used taking into account materials and inner passage design and air movement within the cabinet. As most are a simple open cabinet the sound freq range will be limited.
Ok the AE will not be like a high quality setup but for what they cost they are good value and I've just ordered some.
I could have connected my pc upto my system but to be honest running a 2500Kw amp costs a bit more to run.

For what you are after those AE will be fine, simple to setup and less space used.
