I have recently finished my job working part time at a holiday park, I got my p45 through the post and it said I had been charged £455 woth of tax during that job.

Can I claim that back?

I am 19 years old. and think I am on emergency tax.

I now work part time at Mcdonalds, and every two weeks when I get paid I roughly get charged £45 tax, can I claim that back?

If you don't earn over the non taxable about yes, you can get it back. Probably not until April though.
Can anyone clarify if individuals do in fact have to wait until the end of the tax year to reclaim overpaid PAYE contributions for that year?

In a similar position to the OP, have read the relevant pages on the HMRC website but am still none the wiser on this point

But have to wait to April?

I swaer my mate says every time he gets paid (every two weeks) he rings up this number and the tax is back in his wages on next pay day

Your mate is lying, they write cheques, you need to fill in a form. You don't need to wait til April but you have to sign on the piece of paper saying you will not work anymore until the end of this tax year. Or work anymore that take it over the threshold.

But he's still in employment and you've left.

If your wages go up and down and you pay too much tax or you have a tax code change - in permanent/constant employment they can normally adjust it via your monthly pay.

If you leave employment you'll have to go through the tax office. Give them a call.

The employer can do it, but some can't be arsed, and obviously if you've left he employment in question they won't do it.

You can claim tax back at any point in the year. I recently claimed back tax for the 07/08 and 08/09 years. You need to find out your tax office and then call them up and explain what you want to do. They should then give you an address to submit your P45s to. Send off PHOTOCOPIES of these and a covering letter and wait a few weeks.
